Squid In Malta
#1
hello everyone, i'm from malta.we are already in the month of october and squid seem not to be interested in coming to shore.last year i was fishing for squid in the begining of september.this year we had a very hot summer so sea tends to cools slowly.even if the air temperature sometimes it's cold at night due to the wind, sea is stuck in the 25 degrees. i've been told that at least it has to go down to 21 degrees. am i right?.cant wait to start catching some squid until then happy fishing. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

hi kylaid, its a shame that the there are no squid close to shore. do you know where the squid are if they are not near malta? are they still inside the mediterranean?

cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

they will come but the more they take the more the season comes to close.there was an article in the newspaper that said that when a study was carried out the mediterrranean was said to be getting warmer every year.that proves the amount of jellyfish seen during the winter.

Hi Kylaid,

Are you still getting the lampuki close to malta?

(note - lampuki are also known as mahi mahi or dolphin fish)

Lampuki is one fish I always wanted to catch but have never had the chance!

Hi, i`m also from malta. Last year was my first year for squid fishing from the shore. This year i want to try fishing for squid from the boat too. Can someone pls tell me the about the time of the year for this type of fishing. I also need to know how i should prepare the jigs on the line and what type of jigs are the best.

Last week I went fishing from the shore and some squid came under the light and running after the jigs but when it was close to attack, it stopped from doing this !! This kept going on all night, i tried different jigs with no success <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> All the catch was one small squid!!!!! Does somebody know the reason? The jigs i used were used last winter and were good catchers!!!

hi klamar, the best time for squid fishing in malta is from october till march but as i said before this year they are taking long to start.your experience is not new for me.last year about 30 to 40 squid came at once all together.my lure passing between them but none of them attacked it.dont know the answer for that behaviour.and last thing where did you go fishing that night.happy fishing. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

That time I was fishing from the coast near Lapsi. Thanks for both replies <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> !!

Yesterday and two days before I went again in the same place but I didn`t catch any <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> . I saw only one squid>

I think the best to do is to leave the temperature lower down a bit more as the sea is still a bit warm.

hi, here is some information about sea surface temperatures in the Mediterranean sea:

http://www.oceanweather.com/data/Mediterranean-Sea/SST.GIF

Hope this helps you to catch some squid. This info would be updated regularly so you can check back to see what is going on.

Thanks Glen. Here in Malta we`re again in Summer I`think, because the temperature went up again to 28, 29, 30..... during the day. It won`t help to bring squid close to the shore for sure!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

For the moment I am not doing any fishing for the squid so I don`t know if there`s any squid inshore during this time!

hi klamar let me assure you there's nothing in the sea and we are going in november soon. i don't think this is going to help cause as you know at around march temperature start to rise again. only 'lizz' is around right now. so you are not missing much. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

Where are you fishing at the moment kylaid?

Lizz is also a beautiful catch, so if the squid doesn`t want to come and give some good time this year, maybe we shall start fishing for this fish. I have seen some people fishing for this fish from the shore this year. One should only change the jig!

I have never tried fishing for it yet but I think I should have a go at it this year!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

Lizz (in Maltese)is the fish called Barracuda and the lure used for this fish can vary from artificial fish to spinner. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Btw.. can anyone tell me what is the best wind direction (the direction the wind is blowing from) and force (on the Beaufort Scale) to fish for squid from Cirkewwa/Marfa?!
