G'day Guys,
I discovered this site a few days ago and it inspired me to get in the water ASAP. I've only speared a couple of times before (years ago in Sydney, off the rocks at Bondi), and although I've had my sling since then i've never got around to using it - until today.
I went down to Phillip Island (Sunderland Bay) and managed a good-sized leather-jacket (I think it was a 6 spined) within half an hour. It was a beautiful spot, though a bit murky. There was a great diversity of fish, but few I knew were edible (or worth eating, ie - lots of wrasse) - so I only ended up taking the few shots it took to get the LJ.
I would have loved to fish for longer, but was out by myself and started feeling a tad sketchy in the murk.
I'm going to try the reefs out the back of San Remo in a few days. If anyone has any tips for the area It'd be greatly appreciated.

G'day Glen,
Yeah its pretty cold out there, but managable. Went out again today around Smiths Beach (Phillip Island) and got another few leatherjackets. There were a few schools of good-sized zebra fish/luderick? (several large ones were uniform black/grey), but they were just too cautious.
Its certainly worth getting in the water if you've a half decent wettie.

Smiths Beach is where my freinds and i usually spear. I love the area, its has alot of variety in both terrain and fish. I have never gone there and been dissapointed, always came home with at least 5 X 35cm+ fish. YUMMY on the BBQ!!!
The only thing i recommend is, not just at P. Island but in general, NEVER spear alone!!! Its way dodgy!! Plus, at P. Island the current and tide can chage very quickly and the water loses viz very quickly. I remember going out one time, spearing a fish, and by the time i got back in the water to go get another you couldnt see a thing. I swam out again (like an idiot), got stuck on the reef rocks bout 15m out from the shore, and got thrown around on them by the current! I cut my legs up and was bleeding quite a bit. And i had to swim to shore in water i couldnt see the end of my hand in, bleeding...not a good idea!!
Sharks love such scenarios...
So dont swim alone because if ur in trouble...it could be your leg or arm at stake...maybe even ur life mate. Its not worth it.
Other than that....SMITHS IS GREAT!!! lol

I reckon thats some pretty good advice. I know the Island pretty well (from surfing) and make sure I'm as safe as I can be on my lonesome, but your right - if anytyhing does happen to go bad... I'm screwed!
What a great spot though.
I'm keen to head out around the back of San Remo for a spear. I've fished their quite often with good results so would expect the spearing to be great. That really is a spot to be careful however, and I'm waiting till conditions are good and I've got someone to help drag me from the mouth of a White Pointer! lol.

Hey mate,
I never speared San Remo...but might give it a shot this summer. Im heading up with a few mates sometime soon. In bout 2-3 weeks. Will spear Smiths for sure. Ill let u know the dates and i might see ya down there. That way a group of about 6 guys is quite safe.
