Squid Fishing Rods

Do u need a fishing rod to catch squids?! Can you fish for them without using a fishing rod?! If yes, how do you do it?! How will I cast the line and how will I pull it back?! Thanks a lot!

Yes but I want to fish for them from the shore not from a boat and I think a fishing rod with a reel is the ideal for casting out as far as possible and then reeling in very slowly, aye?! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

a fishing rod is defintely better. though i have seen people casting hand lines quite a long way. if you are fishing with floats you don't cast often and so hand lines can be fine...especially if you are using a heavy float and rig.

I think I will buy a fishing rod with a reel. Thanks a lot for your help. If I may ask one last question, should I attach a small float to the casting line when casting with a rod, or should I let the jig fall to the bottom?! And if I am to attach a small float, what is the ideal depth at which the jig should float beneath the surface?! Thanks a lot.

you can suspend the jig under a float...perhaps 1 or 2 metres deep (in deeper water set it deeper). most people suspend baited squid jags under floats but it does work for artificial jigs too.



most people will only use the float when they want to cast out the line and forget about it. if you are actively casting and retrieving then you generally would not use a float unless you were worried you would get stuck on the sea bed.

Acturally I had success with handline more than fishing rods recently. Dont know if it was my lucky day, a few days a go i went squiding from shore with my handline (for easy transportation) and there was about 10 people there all with rod and reel. There were only 3 squids caught, and i got 2 of them with my handline <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> I think maybe it was because the jigging/retrieveing motion for handline is slightly different for rod/reel, which makes it more attractive for squid?

If the jig takes a very long time to sink (or floats!!!), then attach the jig to a short dropper, about 1 metre above a small ball sinker.
