Arrgh, Ahoy mateys, riddle me this.



Why can't we flounder as soon as it gets dark and all through the night as long as it is a rising tide?



I ask because I went out when there was no wind but it was low tide and we didn't see nearly as many fish as usual. My personal theory is that the large predatory fish which we target are all stuck out in deeper water and can't get over the sand bars etc because of the low water and need the rising tide to get amongst the schools of little fish swarming near the shore at night (which we were wading through hundreds of).

Hi guys,

I moved to Canberra about 12 months ago from Darwin, i am a keen angler (who am i kidding im sick im out 3-4 days a week and when im not fishing i am planning my next trip) anyway was reading the above posts and maybe able to give some advice. LBG is full of fish but targeting certian fish is a challange, Carp are everywhere and you seem to have already got some good advice on how to catch them, ie find a weed bed or grassy bank burley up and load a small size (ultra sharp hook) i use size 4 or 8 mustards with corn kernels as bait then all you have to do is sit back and hold on as these fish can realy put up a show on lite gear, the lighter the tackle the more chance you have of hooking into a good bag of carp (so i have found) in saying this no fishing is a slam dunk so look around for some likley spots and keep tryin untill you crack it.

Redfin on the other hand seem to be the main catch in LBG although most fish caught ae no bigger than 20cm there are some big reddies to be had my best to date is around the 2 kilo mark but have herd of bigger (WOW) now these bigger fish can be hard to locate, My larger reddies have came from shaded banks after a hot day or trolling deep divers for natives but i found if you caught a large reddie in a area there would be more there (not sure if they school in size lots but this does seem to be the case in LBG) my no 1 reddie lure at the moment is a ecogear sx40 colour 307 (i have caught a 3 kilo golden on this as well) but these red in are agressive and seem to hit just about anything.

Now this is where the fun starts LBG natives i have fished hard for these fish over the coarse of the past few months and it took alot of hours on the water before i had any sucsess, in saying this i never set the fishing world on fire this year i caught about 20 golden perch and only 2 cod for the year and im out alot but am happy to share what i have lernt, Spinner/chatter baits are the go and i have caught both my cod on a purple/black spinnerbait, both my cod where caught right on dark casting into snags (both fish hit the lure on the drop) my best fish was around 6 kilo as for the goldens a big lure is not always the way to go i caught alot of my fish targeting redfin in the snags (and had some big bust ups doing this) try everything in your box of triks you might get a shock my other half caught a 4 kilo golden using a 5cm jerk shad in very shallow water (great to watch) but most of my fish came from using buzzbaits (as small as you can find them) on or after dark on anyone of LBG weedy banks.



I am not claming to know it all or even half of it, but i have caught fish using the above methods and hope it helps you, and if anyone has any tips for me it would be a great help as our sport demands that we never stop learning i think thats why so many of us love it so much, tight lines guys im off to catch a carp in Canberras carp out.

I have caught mullet and bream at Lake Tyers in Victoria on fly (spent 3 days, 12 hours a day, for 5 fish, 4 mullet and a bream) while everyone around me bagged out on hard bodies everyday, but if thats what your into have a crack, im sure salmon or even a flattie would take a fly if it was put into the right spot. let me know how you go

Lake Tyers ahhh gods country, i grew up in Bruthen and so grew up fishing Lake Tyers, Tambo river ect the big rubber liped bream in that lake can shatter a mans tackle and his ego in a hart beat........I LOVE IT!

Well done with those Talior on fly, Lake Tyers Talior are very cunning indeed.

I am thinking the back waters of Lake G would be a likley spot for a yella or two or a cod if im lucky.

Has anyone fished it lately? Herd any reports? Its that or i fish LBG but i am a bit over it at the moment need a change.

I used to enjoy fly fishing for carp in the lake (Lake BG). Was good fun.

The wind is against me, i think the loomis and spinnerbaits can be put away.

Hey i have just started Kayak fishing recently although i have been fishing the lake for some time. I want to catch a native, can anyone give me any good spots and techniques for trolling?

The call is the most successful easy to have small pink Stumpjumper. Now it is going to catch fish native to the lake planted in a golden perch and Murray cod. When I went to a local tackle shop yesterday and bought the spinnerbaits that attract the locals seem to have the best success in native.

Is it just me or has the popularity of fishing in Canberra really exploded lately? It seems as though more and more people are getting out around the lakes on a regular basis. Even as recently as a few years ago you could have your pick of spots and it was relatively easy to find a 'secret spot' that you knew hadn't been tooo overfished. I reckon this is getting more and more rare.



I haven't decided if this is good or bad but I suppose it's probably a bit of both. It's great to see plenty of keen fisherman on here sharing reports and providing updates from around the place but I can't help but feel there is a new breed of canberra fishos (that aren't members on here) that seem to take a lot and contribute nothing. I've read a few stories on here lately about people taking natives from the local lakes and I watched a couple of blokes take a nice fat yella home from LBG last week (not before it sat in the sun for a couple of hours while they tried their best to get more). I realise there is probably nothing illegal about this but I can't help but feel that it goes against the grain of what fishing around Canberra is all about. A lot of effort is put in by groups like the CRFA to stock and maintain the local waterways with natives and reduce the number of carp and redfin and it's a bloody shame to see a mature native taken home when it would probably be considered inedible by most people anyway.



I suppose my point is that while it's great to see so many boats and yaks out on the water these days I just hope that the great mentality towards fishing in Canberra stays in tact as more and more people twig to the fact that there is some quality fishing to be had around the place. It sh*ts me to rock up to what used to be great fishing spots and they're littered with corn tins, stinking carp and longnecks. Then you've got the scumbags that watch people leave their cars, whether it be by boat or on foot so that they can break in for a couple of bucks in the ashtray, we've all heard the stories.



Anyway apologies for ranting on, I just hope that with the apparent surge in popularity of fishing around Canberra during the warmer months, the majority of newcomers do the right thing. Again, it's up to us to make sure that exact native locations aren't made available to any joe shmoe on the net, it's in all our best interests.
