Giant Squid Fishing - Recommended Tackle
#1
Hi everyone, I came across an article discussing the appropriate fishing gear to target giant Humboldt squid:

Quote:"There are some bigger ones out there, up to about 50 lbs.," Yamate said. "You can't get by with light line; 40-lb. is good, 50's even better and braided line is best."

Yamate recommended anglers bring nothing less than a Penn 4/0, a small 2-speed or the equivalent spooled up with no less than 300 yards of line.

Squid are fished on the drift, so good weather and heavy jigs are helpful.

"It's tough when there's a lot of wind on the bank," Yamate said.

Yamate strongly suggested that anglers on the hunt for the jumbo mollusks stick with the large, commercial-style squid jigs like the ones made by Promar.

"They weigh about 2 lbs.," Yamate said. "If you need to buy some, we have plenty at the landing."

But leave the regular yo-yo jigs at home. They are dangerous.

"The trebles can rip right through a squid and come out like a rocket," Yamate explained. "We hate to see a trip end early, so we don't allow them on Seaforth boats."

Don't forget to dress warmly.

"It's been unusually cold this winter," Yamate said. "Guys' who've been a time or two come back wearing slickers or bib overalls."

Wow, these are some serious squids. And the "long wind" technique they used could a bit risky <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I use a two speed reel ( Shimano Tyrnos 30) spooled with 100lb PowerPro braid. For the rod I use the 6ft Shimano Trevala rated for 200lb braided line. For the jigs I use either the ahi war club or the CandyCatchers 2.5lb squid jig. The 2speed reel makes it much easier on the angler to bring the squid to the boat, specially when you have to reel it in from 800-1200ft.

We had been supplying the Heavy Humboldt jigs that CandyCatchers was marketing. If you are wanting those, you will need to buy them directly from us now.

We also have a NEW jig for catching Humboldt Squid. It's a TOTALLY new design and we are just starting to market them. They are the most advanced jig anywhere, specifically designed for these squid. They feature Heavy Duty 2" diameter hooks, with green glow tubing on the hook shafts for extra attraction. The main feature of these is that it uses out own water activated Micro-Lights to light up the top acrylic rod that has a spiral shaped ribbon inside. There are five different colors of lights that can be used (Red, Green, Blue, White, and Yellow). As the lights flash inside alternately from end to end, it creates a "Pulsing" lighting of the acrylic rod. The testing that our select customers have done shows that it clearly outfishes every jig on the market, by far!!! Current size/weight. 14" and 14 ounces. There is a hole on the bottom so that additional weight can be added.

Those glowing jigs look pretty good. I ussually get my CandyCatchers straight from Randy. Any chance that those glowing jigs will be made in a bigger size? I have a small light that looks like a pacifier that I attach to the Ahi jigs at the bottom that work the same way. They light up as soon as they hit water.

Yes, for next year, I plan to up the weight to approximately 2 pounds. This was the first production run on these, so we will be modifying these in the future. I also plan to have small barbs on the hooks as well in the future, for fewer lost hookups.

I like the barbed idea, as well as making a bigger jig. The light is more crucial down in the depth where there's no light.

I am interested in the pulsing LED jigs and barbed jigs.  I can't get your web site to work, though.  It keeps asking me for a password.

Yes, I've been having some problems with the brainless people that do my website hosting. Website should be working now. As for the LED lighted Humboldt Jigs, I don't have those on the website yet. Also, the hooks won't have barbs until I do the next production of these.

Contact me at mail@squidjig.com and I can help you with your order.
