Midsummer Squid Fishing?

A friend was out this week near the coast in 60 feet of water fishing for fluke on an incoming tide in the morning daylight and he said they couldn't get to the fish because they kept hooking up with squid. He said they were hard to get on the boat because they would fall off the hook (which he said was a fluke jig baited with squid) but he did manage to land a dozen 6-10 inch loligo.

 

That said, does anyone have experience squiding in the summer. Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA

Years ago, fishing 2-3 miles out between Marthas Vineyard and Mashpee we were drop fishing and kept getting little hits. It was dead calm out and we ended up pulling in 10-15 squid. Mostly small about 7-9. It was August when we got them and it was around 50-65 deep.

My friend said they were in 60 feet of water. Frances Fleet posted this yesterday on their blog.

 

"Captain Greg reported a decent night on the combo trip. We had a very fast drift in the first part of the night. We put on the heavy lead and long leaders and started picking away. We did have one monster doormat just shy of 12 pounds. Once the wind died and the tide eased the squid started coming to the surface. Those who fished for them went home with a nice haul."

Does anyone go squid fishing in October? I used to go catch them when I was younger at mass maritime by the ship.

Benzzino, I think everybody here is waiting for the "fall run". There are certainly squids around many places in the NE in August, but usually there are more to be caught in the spring and again in the fall. I have caught most squids in October in MA, hopefully we will have a good fall run this year but it has been short and late the last couple of years.
