Kemaman, Terengganu Field Report..
#1
Hello Folks! Greetings from Malaysia..

Just got back from an overnite jigging trip off the coast of Kemaman, a town off Peninsular Malaysia's East Coast which is about 5 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, our capital City. The sea was pretty rough on Saturday May 5, so, we optimised our trip with some intensive jigging. This time of the year, its squid season and Terengganu is known to yield a good catch. Large 'sotong torak', cuttlefish and calamaries are known to spawn here. My buddies and I have charted an 'A' class inshore vessel and spent about 12 hours jigging. The results were encouraging but we didn't really experience feeding frenzy. Anyways, I tried my Williamson Lure Chokka jig which was very effective in landing several good table sized squids.. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

The 'A' class vessels charge about RM600 a day for squid-jigging trips. They depart at about 3 in the afternoon till the next morning..

A scene from Kemaman..

Sea conditions were quite rough yesterday evening due to strong Easterly winds.. It came to a dead calm at night and continued to pour in the morning..

Here's me trying out my luck..

Thanks for your kind words mate! We landed about 80 squids of various sizes.. The weather was too foul to continue, so we decided that it was best to head back..

Hi everyone, Samo is famous once again with another article about squid-jigging in Kemaman, Terengganu (Malaysia)

The jig's up for squid

SAM CHEONG

SAM CHEONG ends a three-year wait to get up close and personal with squid.

WHITE caps, choppy seas and a storm-front - if it wasn't for the thought of an ice-chest filled to the brim with freshly-jigged squid, I'd rather have been at home with my wife and dogs.

But when the opportunity arose recently, it didn't take me long to put on my poker-face to ask if there was a place for me when a buddy, Lawrence Leong, was going squid-jigging in Kemaman, Terengganu.

For three years, I had longed for such a trip, and had stocked up on my egi (artificial shrimp) lures made by Japanese companies like Yamashita and Yo-Zuri.

All that was left to be done was a phone call from Leong to "Cikgu" Tan, a Kemaman resident who is a good fishing buddy to my host. "Eh Sam, we are on! Don't forget to bring your rain gear ah..," reminded Leong....

G'Day mate! Thanks for the heads-up... I was actually thinking of changing to a lighter line setting..But unfortunately -- here in Malaysia, its impossible for me to obtain a smaller Alvey or Killwell handcaster.. A lighter line may have been even more fun! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />:

I came across another article about squid fishing in the South China Sea off Terengganu’s coast for the National Squid Jigging Fiesta.

Quote:A jig on the South China Sea

by ALAN TEH LEAM SENG

A newbie at jigging for squids, ALAN TEH LEAM SENG is quick to learn little tricks with a line and a hook

THE boatman let out a loud bellow and suddenly the outboard motor spluttered into total silence. We had arrived.

Though we weren’t told to, we instinctively moved over to the sides of the boat and lowered our jigs into the South China Sea off Terengganu’s coast for the National Squid Jigging Fiesta. This is the third such competition in Pulau Redang.

This was my first attempt at squid jigging and I merely imitated the actions of the more experienced. Earlier, when we embarked at the Laguna Redang Resort jetty in Pulau Redang, the boatman or tekong advised us to be as quiet as possible for fear of frightening away the squids.

“You can whisper if you really need to ask questions,” he smiled at me reassuringly.

The only sound heard was the gentle lapping of waves against our boat as we rhythmically moved the fishing lines, with hooks attached, up and down to attract the soft cephalopods to hooks attached to our jigs.
