Squid Fishing Communities

Hi all,



Firstof all apologies. I am a complete novice to all things squidy, apart from eating the lovely things, that is. I would like information about any squid fishing communities that you may know of. I am approching this from a soiological point of view. Are there any villaegs towns, that you know of/ have visited/reside in, that are heavily reliant on squid fishing? Any further information would be gratefully recieved.

Yes -- Santa Rosalia, BCS in the Gulf of California is an absoutely amazing place. There is a lot of really interesting socioeconomic stuff going on right now, with Mexican squid-permit holders joining together to form cooperative fishing groups to rival the large Korean processing plants that heretofore controlled the show. The town has a few thousand people and about 60,000 tons of Humboldt squid are landed per year -- all caught on hand-lines with jigs.



We do a lot of research there, mostly biology and oceanography, but the sociology has me intrigued. There is a great project there for somebody who knows how to do this work. Let me know if you are interersted in learning more. How do you send individual messages to people on this forum anyway? -- I haven't discovered that yet.

I wonder if you can help.



I live in San Diego, CA and am in need of some intact giant or Humboldt squid for a science demonstration connected with the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The whole squid is going to be disected to demonstrate certain aspects of their anatomy for the students. This project takes place the first week of June, 2010, at the Exploratorium.



Do you know how could I arrange getting about 6 or so giant squid to take back to San Diego, or get shipped directly to San Francisco?



Is Santa Rosalia in Baja the only reliable place to find giant squid right now, for this purpose?



If so, any suggestions for a place to call or email in Santa Rosalia, or elsewhere?
