Hey all, glad I found you. I've been looking for a couple of days. I knew this forum existed from talking to some people down at the Goat Island bridge last year. I'm not a squid fisherman myself, just an avid outdoorsman. I came by some info last week that really burned me so I wanted to give you all a heads up.

A relative in law enforcement overheard me talking about fishing RI and commenced to tell me about "the problems" (his words not mine) during squid runs at Goat Island. This was the general gist:

The management of the Hyatt got their panties in a twist the last time because some of the guests and employees were complaining about the crowd and "congestion". They went to the city on the QT and asked if there was something that could be done. The city explained to them that the fishermen were well within their rights, but they would put some personnel in the area to enforce property rights, parking rules, traffic, etc.

Not being entirely satisfied with that answer, Hyatt decided to talk to the state police to see if they or any other state agency had jurisdiction. Well, you can see where this is going. Now the state police are involved, the fish and game, and the local police. They're going to make it "uncomfortable" for a large crowd by checking plates, inspection stickers, etc. They'll be checking for alcohol too. They already have the tow companies on alert for the next month to have extra drivers available. The strategy is to scare some away from the get go and if that doesn't work a few righteous arrests should thin the crowd a bit. He said they're expecting immigration to show up with a list of default warrants. Can you believe it!? What is this, Russia?

This really p*****s me off! Cant they leave us alone? Pretty soon there will be no place left to fish in this g*****n town.

Well, forewarned is forearmed my friends, spread the word! Keep it sober and keep the cars back (especially if your sticker or registration is bad). Don't give the jerks at Hyatt or city hall any ammo to bother you.

WTF! I've been fishing in RI for 20 years now... I use to remember when fishing was allowed on both sides of the bridge, overhead casting was allowed... now everything has changed... the state has taken away ALOT of public fishing areas now and made parking a real B for for the public... last I've heard... fishing docks in Tiverton was fenced off... squid there were so packed people were just scooping them up with nets... I mean you can literally walk on water when they were in!

Well, we've heard from the Hyatt managment ( ? Brian ?- I think that was the valets name when we stayed there last spring) Thanks for your input sirs. We'll all remember to stay and drink elsewhere. Wouldn't want to sully your fine establishment with our fishrerman's dollars.
I am concerned with them shutting us down as well.

Let's form a coalition.

I think if we can get enough signatures, we can have them get traffic cops to shut down one lane, and give US MORE ROOM. Maybe turn it into a recognized festival and get some sausage vendors involved. Who wouldn't want a sausage and onion sandwich?

Fishing is a basic right and a simple past time.

The bridge does not belong to the Hyatt.

We should respect that people need to get in and out of the hotel, but they don't need to be assholes either.

Last year this biotch couldn't go around a friend of mine walking along the edge of the road (whom is the president of a lure company).

She wailed on the horn at which point he walked right in the middle of the lane, the rebel.

There was lots of room on the other side, and she was just being annoying but it pissed me off so bad I wanted to decorate her SUV with a nice inky squid.

I am sure that would have gotten us thrown off the bridge, so I did not do it, but I wanted to, really badly.

Let's keep our cool, and show respect for any officers on patrol, and who knows, maybe we can convince them to come and join us after they get off their shift.

It is much better to have them on our side.

Actually had another idea.

We should get a group to approach the Hyatt about a squid fishermans special.

Part of it would be a freezer truck where you could check you squid just like a coat check, and this way we can squid all the whole time, drink in the bar, and go to bed walking distance away.

Maybe even set up a temporary hosing off area to tidy up before coming into the place.

LOL! Great idea DrCiro! Good luck with it though! Those snoody bastards are trying to rid us of our rights. Newport is an old Historic town where boating and fishing is part of the history! Why are they trying to rid us of the things that people travel many miles and spend lots of $$$$ to experience ($200/ night at the Hyatt this weekend during construction time). When you have the ocean you have fishermen and boats! The management should just live with it! I can see if we are disrespecting their property or customers, but we are not even on their property!!!

I can't see the management allowing us "Dirty, low-class" fisherman walk the halls of their "upper class" living quarters. Money talks in business, just not the fishermans' money at the Hyatt!!!!

Good luck to all this fishing season! I hope to see you out there!!!

DrCiro I would have to heavily disagree with your first statement. People pay a lot of money to stay at the hotel and also to have weddings right down a little further. You or your friend should not be in the street in the way of cars. It is called J walking and it is another reason they want to shut us down. So next time tell your friend the car has the right of way and to get back on the sied of the road.

This will be my third year now and I do not want it to be my last. I got 2 parking tickets lat year in the same night, but you know what, it was my fault not the towns, I should have parked somewhere else.

What I am trying to say is GUYS and GALS What ever you do in life has rules and consequences, it is up to us to obey and I guess help inforce the rules to prevent the consequences everyone speaks of.

Good luck To All See You Up There Soon

Tell me some of you guys were there ...i think 2 yrs ago when there was a wedding at the Hyatt and all those fights broke out amongst the wedding party. The cops came there in paddy wagons and arrested half the wedding party. They cart off all the drunks and we all return to fishing. Not an hour passes when two guys from the wedding come outside again, start brawling in front of the hotel, then you see the cops lights on the newport/jamestown bridge (can't remember which it is), then on the goat island bridge where they wound up making yet another arrest. What an entertaining night that was.

Seriously?! We aren't even fishing on their property...so what does that have to do with how much they pay or weddings? And about parking tickets...you can hardly park anywhere in Newport without getting a ticket...it's rediculous...employees downtown actually have to ride their bikes or walk to work because of the rediculous parking. Of course everything you do in life has rules and consequences, but give me a break...it's just squidding. And the Hyatt should be thankful ... because of the squid GI is world famous! I wish people would stop making such a big deal about it. Respect others, clean up after yourselves, and enjoy life! It's all good, though...I'm just excited to see those little guys get here...enjoy the thrill of the catch...and our love of fishing.
Interesting commentary but, seriously folks . . . ANY SQUID???
