Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I will be coming up from Guilford CT with boat once the bite starts. Squidman, I too would like to know, what is this beerfest?
Hey Stripey, I keep my boat in Guilford so we should try and hook up and nail some squid in the next few weeks. We can share expenses. I've got a 20' ft Aquasport Center Counsel that I often trailer to RI. What are you running? Snaildarter
Definitely, I'm in RI all the time. I took boat to Watch Hill last weekend.

Anyway, that would be cool, as soon as the bite starts, I'm going up there with my rig. It's a 17' Wahoo! I went last year too, on May 5th, we got the big skunk though, even from the boat. The whole time I was there I did not see one squid caught by anyone. I was there for whole day and into the night, left at about 3 am! This time I want to try and time it better. Long haul and big $$$ in gas!

Do you have a red toyota pickup?

No I have a green dodge Dakota with a V8. I went up there last year and got the big skunk too. From what I could tell g=from this forum, there was only a good 3-day window and after that it was hit or miss, mostly miss. Hopefully my boat will be ready after next weekend. Then its a matter of getting the bite. I'm checking this site everyday, usually more than once so let's stay in touch and put something together. Snaildarter
hey is anyone going to the bridge this weekend? im not but i know the window of days to fish for squid when the bite is really hot are few so i dont want to miss the good squiding when i go out with my cousin who is new to it. so just keep us updated please
i just want to ad that I also have a 23 maritime skif that i trailer everywhere and would be willing to fish out of the boat if anyones has any experience with squid fishing from a small boat.
That sounds like a good way to do it, shouldn't be much different from catching them off the bridge or dock and it would get you out away from the crowds. I'm sure there are some boat ramps not far from the G.I. bridge and other than driving down with the boat it shouldn't use much fuel at all, you could drive maybe half a mile from the launch, drop anchor and catch squid all night.

I bought a small generator this year (1200 watts) which would power a couple of 500 or 600 watt lights no problem. Which is what some guys were using last year and were making a killing. I was there with my sealed beam light and later a coleman lantern and got a few but guys about 50 ft away were getting buckets full around the generators and I promised myself that I was going to get a set up like that.

I never knew how good really fresh squid could taste 'til the past year or two when I brought some home, now I'm hooked.

If you want to hook up when you come down I'm sure we could take the generator on your boat (if you want to do that), what I mean is I'm sure we could set it up and rig up a couple of lights to shine in the water and get a bunch of squid and not have all the hassles on shore with the crowds.

I was thinking about taking the generator out on a kayak I have or else look for a spot on the naval base or something for the same reason (just too many people and some of them pretty rude) it's like "combat fishing" there on the bridge and the wall. Between that and the parking I don't thing I'll be going there this year.

Last year, squid fishing in Jamestown a guy actually wanted to push me off the dock because he was all frustrated when he couldn't catch some squid that were swimming around and I came over and casted maybe 10 ft from where he was fishing : (. Some guys just take it too seriously.
Anyone have any luck yet? I am hoping to get out tonight or tomorrow (if its not raining). I don't want to miss the fury this year as last year it was quite disappointing with only 7 squid.
If all the folks on this thread show up with their new generators and if they are any indication of how many folks went out and got new generators (after watching the guys with those huge lights on the red frame by the causeway parking make the big killing); newport is gonna be like daylite for the next few weeks. I'm gonna have to get even more lites to compete. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I was in Newport yesterday and scoped out the causeway.

What I thought were ink stains were of other origin so there were none to be seen.

I walked around a bit and did not see any squid in the water.

The guys that were out the eve before reported no luck.

It is still early.

I noticed that the tree were blossoming during the peak catch last year.

There may be a correlation.

DrCiro
DrCiro, you are correct. My wife told me the same thing.

If tree were blooming, blossoming then that's when the squid runs. Happened every year.

On route 114 to goat island, there are lots of tree (cherry tree it seems) just watch that for hints.
does anyone have any ideas on what i should fish for and where if the squid bite isnt going?thanks squidheads
FYI>....I was looking around today, and the trees are starting to blossom! shouldn't be much longer!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Squidheads, I would first look into the regs for the area (State) waters you'll be fishing in. Look up regs and fishable dates / slot limits for, Stripers....Tatog ( Black Fish ).....and Summer Flounder ( Fluke ) will be some of the first speicies you'll be seeing show up.... In alot of places, the Stripers and Black Fish are already there and plentifull...

Best of luck..

Ned

PS: If you don't mind me asking, Where are you located? PM me the answer if you don't want to post it in public...
Hey guys. My neighbors went to the causeway today. There was nothing unfortunately. Now rain has kicked in and I should be out there on the 18. People please keep us inform on squid bites also pictures would be nice,
It's been real quiet on here today...just wondering if anyones heard any news or anything..should be soon!!

With the warmer weather later this week, I would hope they come in next week...
I'd give Stonington a try if I can get some info on the area. With the cost of fuel for the boat and truck, I don't want to go there without some spots or numbers that have proven productive in the past. I know Narragansset Bay and the extra 35 minute drive is worth it to me if I can get my bucket full. snaildarter
Hey snaildarter. If you ever want a non boater to come along, I'm more than willing to pitch in for gas. I'm very flexible with time so as long as you give me a couple hours notice, i'm usually good to go. About the stonington spot, i've never once heard of anyone catching squid down there. I mean, i'm always up for trying a new spot but agree that w/ the cost of fuel these days, taking blind stabs in the dark aren't exactly wallet friendly.

I wish I was my brother today. He's out halibut fishing in Kodiak alaska to "catch props to use in a copenhagen ad" The best part is the company is paying for all of it AND he gets to go again tomorrow. Makes me think I chose the wrong profession

Knowing my luck Mr.Boston, thats when they will show up for sure. I'll be in NC for the week, next week. But on our return, April 27th, one of the first things we will do is head right back out on another adventure to Goat Island Bridge <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> Things should be into full swing at that time. Hopefully I can also meet up with all all of the fine members on this site. If anyone is wondering what I look like, if you spot this guy, just say hello. Thats me to the right in the US Army Cap.....
This is kind of unreal for me. Three guys who live or work in New Britain, CT. and we meet on a Squid Fishing Forum.... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I wanted to ask you two, what do you both think about giving Stonington,CT a try this year also? I read in some old papers, there was reports of squiding in the Mystic river and surrounding areas...

Well, nice to meet you both and hopefully we can all meet up sometime..

YFIS,

Nice fluke! Man I can't wait for the season to start. Did they say whether or not they were keeping the 19" 7 fish limit in Rhodie this year? It seems like every year they raise the regs, you catch nothing but shorts that would've been keepers last yr. I can't tell you how many fluke in the 18-18 3/4" range I caught last year

I hear that Fluke, I'm in the same boat as you are. They are just getting crazy with some of the regs out there now. I'll have to look up the new ones if any, not sure.

We will have to hook up when I get back from NC....I sent you a PM the other day, did you get it? Check your messeges, if not, I'll resend.....
