Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
Sfox sorry I have to argue with you. First week of may is WAY OFF. I would say beggining of the last week of april! But according to what data I've collected. I've never starting catching squid later then the April 25.
soccerlife945, you are a hardcore fisherman, so start early like the rest of us <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

But as you know it can be missed or hit, if you don't invest your time wisely.

As a matter of fact, I know John and Suzi are hardcore and they did well last year, but they invest lots of time into it.

They also get 'speeding ticket' as well <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> haha! Next time drive slower John.

What I want to say is that, to be on the safe side (some people travel up to 3 or 4 hours), so I don't want them to go empty hand.

Lots of people live close, like you, that's why we need your report ...
I LIVE 3 HOURS AWAY!!! Yeah its true I've wasted more money in gas and this years going to be worst. I'll be there on the 15th for sure.!

Maybe we should have carpool and set a timeframe to fish like 48 hours weekend marathon <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

That way save us $$ on gas <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> I'm sure MrBoston will join us.
Just so you all know. I dont fish at The causeway no more. I would if I found a way to bunk under the bridge with my private vessel. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

<img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> doesn't mean we can't join with you and drink some beer ? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />
hey soccer life, i also have a boat and have been looking for a place to launch my boat and go fish for squid down there. do you have any suggestions? because ive been asking around and no one really does alot of it everyone goes off the bridge so it would seem like there wouldnt b alot of boats out on the water so could you help me out?
I am also curious about getting in there with a boat. Soccerlife, do you fish right near the bridge from your boat?
Soccerlife, Travis,

I know of three ramps in this area. One is in the Fort Adams state park (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&am...t%A0Map=Get+Map ), last time I checked it was a little rough, but, it has decent parking.

The second is next to kings park (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&am...t%A0Map=Get+Map), you may have issues with larger vessels.

The third, maybe OK to launch a dingy (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&am...t%A0Map=Get+Map)

A friend last year posted about a nice public boat launch in Portsmouth. About 10 minutes away from Newport.
Yes sir I am from CT...new britain to be exact. Let me know if you wanna meet up. Pretty much all I do once winter passes is fish.
I don't believe this. What a small world it is sometimes. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Confusedq:' /> I'm also from and living in New Britain right now....hehehehhe We should talk and try to car pool down to

RI sometime, or even the CT shore. I'm in the same boat as you Fluke, I pretty much just fish with my free time, or take my son to baseball this time of year....

I sent you a PM.

Ned
Went out last night for a while. Nothing yet. Did, see some small shrimp swimming about.

Hopefully next Wed. night I will be eating Calamari.

Also, It was good to see you Alan.

When the wife and my son and I go to RI ( Goat Island ) we pack you enough provisions for a 2 day stay. We cook all our meals and squid fish for two days straight...We enjoy our trips to RI, and being a 2 hour drive away, we have to make the trip worth our while. Gas is a killer these days, thank God our mini SUV is pretty good on fuel. But the times we spend there are priceless to us, and we sure do love the crowd, I really enjoy meeting all the different people and making new friends every year..

Hope to see you all there soon.

Ned, Margie, DoDong David
Tatonka,

Thank you for the ramp information. I will check on the one at Fort Adams next time I am down there. I actually had a dream last night that I was squidding, managed to fill half a bucket. My wife thinks I am nuts...

Can you get in and out of Fort Adams at night? I understood that you couldn't.

Anyone know?

Officially no. Unofficially the gate is usually left open and sometimes the park rangers are kind. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Confusedq:' />

Almost forgot. There is also a nice ramp at Fort Getty Recreation Area off Beavertail Road in Jamestown. However, there is a small parking fee.

I found a link to all the public ramps in RI. Towards the bottom you'll find the saltwater ramps listed by town.

There is a ramp in Wickford as well which isn't as close to GIsland but allows you squid fish up in the bay. 3of us caught three buckets there in one night two years ago. It was right next to the Quonnset Pier. We were in a boat. Best of luck. Snaildarter

I work in New Britain at CCSU. In fact I am e-mailing from my office (On lunch break). Will be taking the boat up to RI to squid fish as soon as the word is out that they are thick. Otherwise it isn't worth trailering up there for just a few. Snaildarter

Ned, I was mistaken about the ramp. It is in N. Kingston (Wilson Park), not Wickford.

Do you guys that squid fish from boats go at night or during the day?
Quote:Hey Newport tentacle wrestlers,

You may remember me from last year, I was the guy who wheeled his gear on a fat-wheeled, red radio flyer wagon (along with the kid sometimes)

I was thinking of printing up some t-shirts with some faux squid ink spots, a demographic cross section of some squiders and maybe a tentacle coming from the deep grabbing someone off the causeway.

I'd work on the artwork and try to have something by the time the squid show, if I knew there was some interest.

It is more for fun so I'd keep it as close to at cost as possible.

let me know if there is interest, and I will follow up.

I'd probably need a couple dozen people to make it worth while.

I go my lures last weekend at the NE show in Providence, thanks to the heads up on squidfish.net, and am freezing up some nice blocks of salty water 3.5% salt is the same as ocean water pretty much, in an attempt to keeep the squiod fresh.

Look foward to seeing you inked.

Yep I remember you will be looking forward to seeing you

I fish during the day and at night from the boat. I do better at night. In fact one day when I was anchored about 100 yds from the GI Bridge during the day I caught none. For the people on the bridge it was lock and load. They were catching triples. I concluded that because it was a sunny day, the shadow of my boat was scaring them. When I started to drift, I started catching.

However, I've never done as well during the day as at night.

One trick I learned while fluking along the RI Beaches in May is to tie a squid jig about 3 feet above your three way swivel of the fluke rig. You will catch some squid along with the fluke. All the best.
