Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I'll be there tomorrow nite.......

I did pretty well the other nite.....the squid ARE in, but there are skipjack blues and small bass etc scaring the chit outta them as they come thru your lights......that's contributing to their skittish feeding.

We may not get the run we had last year, plain and simple. Every year is different. Either way, I have fun trying, though I have been sick from the many rainy cold LONG nights out there....and went myself the other nite WHILE I was sick, until 2:30 in the morning LOL.......
See you watch this site (for a little while anyway) also. Se ya Sat nite. If I don't see you at the Newport yell at me near the GI bridge. I can't say I'll swing through for sure but on the way back to tthe launch is a good bet.

Pretty quiet on the forum, I'm heading out now. Will post a report when I return
I think it's going to be windy as hell, but I'm heading out to GI this afternoon as well. Hopefully, squid will cooperate and I'll see fellow squidsters as well. If ya see me, stop by as say hi.

will post when I return.

Hi everyone,

I'm a 2nd year squidfisher from MA. Every time i've ever squid fished, it has been at goat island (except one very unproductive trip to Woods Hole). While at the bridge a couple nights ago, a man pulled up in a pickup truck selling squid. I had been at the bridge all night and managed only a dozen, but this guy had full buckets somehow. Does anyone know what is going on here? I've heard people talking about net squidding and such.

those guys may be fishing from a boat. But the squid do run anywhere from Chatham to Galilee. Some people just have better mo-jo than us!!!
they're calling for heavy rain in the newport area tonight <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> ...possibly over an inch.

on another note, i realized today how sick my fishing addiction is. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> Of the 15 squid i caught tues/wed, i kept 1 whole....as a secret weapon for the fluke season.
George,

You are a NUT! Hope to see you soon so we can really catch some squid! Where the hell are they?!?!?

Skane
i think the squid got smarter... i saw a whole bunch feeding on bait fish, but did not touch the jigs at all... they are definitely here at goat island, they are feeding, but not on the jigs...

talk about a festival of lights last night... i got there around 10 pm just before high tide and the bridge was literally packed from one end to the other... the crowd started to dwindle down after midnight... no one was catching much of anything... i probably saw about a dozen squid being catch within 3 hours of being there...

I fished from 5 - midnight on the GI bridge. This was my first time I was skunked. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> I did see squid feeding under my lamp but nothing came near my jigs. Like mino 401 said, bridge was packed, end to end. You would think THE BITE was on. Nice to meet you squidheads and thanks for buying a reflector. I hope it helped you fill a bucket. I did meet a few squidfish people over on the wall. Johnat & Suzy and the guy with the sweet Honda genny.(can't remember his nickname). Maybe next time I'll try the wall and join the party. I hope you 3 post and tell me things got exciting after I left.

I do not know if it got better after you left, but they sure were not good Sunday am.

I fished from 7- 11 without a bite. I did not even have a chance to lose any. Also did not see 1 caught by any one . Their was a guy who came at 5:30 and he had 3 when I arrived.
This year looks bad. I am getting my gears ready for stripe bass fishing.
i'm giving up on squid and getting ready to go catch some blue crabs =)

I don't think that I will completely give up on squid this season. I'l give it a couple of more weeks. But its definatly time for stripers!!

I stayed local and went out after the Celtics game. Fished the end of the incoming for 2 hours, got three. All on the pink. One on a cst retrieve, the other 2 jigging the school of 10 or so that came to the lites.

It is Striper season, ate fresh last Wed nite after boating 2 at 32" and a few dozen between 20 and 26".

Blusterblue,

where do you fish for striper that you got so much bite already? I'm thinking going for stripers or any other fish if i can't catch any squids. When does season begin for stripers and fluke? and the best spot for it? I got to atleast show something for the gas i use to travel to RI and Hyannis or the Mrs. will take away the key to the van and boat. Thanks...
Uptech, The fish are moving thru and into Buzzards bay now. Folks have been getting keepers in Ri for a couple weeks now. Some of them will have moved thru the canal and be moving up thru Cape cod bay and northward. During the migration they move about 15 miles a day with the tide, so if you go to a place that has alot of current and you set up outside of the heaviest flow and down current of it you will often find stripers waiting for the tide to turn so they can swim with it. ANother method is to set up in an area of heavy current and fish the slack thru the northbound current. The point is, stripers will move with the current or the slack and seldom against the curent so if they come up upon an area of heavy current they will wait for it to turn before proceeding.

So, watch the reports for fish that are 15 miles South of your desired spot and go to your spot the next day in time for the slack tide and fish thru the northbound change.

good luck, tight lines. Oh yeah, Storm wildeye shads direct tied were the lure of the day.
