Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I am wondering anyone uses baitcasting setup for squid jigging. I have spinning setup and it's easier to jig the rod using right hand while cranking with left hand. But I also bought a Daiwa sweepfire baitcasting rod (only $10 from Capitol NYC) which has a softer fiberglass blank and produces much better jigging action (more like a flyrod). Since fishing from the bridge/wall you don't need to cast too far, I figure a baitcasting setup is much easier to release the line into water.
I was using mine yesterday for a little while (calcutta 150 w/ 30lb braid) It's my schoolie combo but I decided to rig it up with different colors from what I had on the spinning setup. Personally I like the feel of the baitcaster w/ braid much more than the spinning setup. I find it much easier to detect the slightest strike or tension on the line. Then again i'm a bass guy and use it to winch fish outta heavy cover so I'm a bit biased. Don't get me wrong, i've got probably 10 or more spinning setups too, each w/ their own specialty.

Contrary to what squidaholic above me said about being able to pull the squid in faster w/ a spinning reel vs. the baitcaster, I think its not really definitive. What i mean is it depends more on the gear ratio of the reel than the style. I could take a baitcaster like my Daiwa Steez that has a 6:3.1 gear ratio and put it up against my Quantum Cabo 40 and the steez will bring the squid up much quicker every time. I can also cast it further than my spinning reels when fishing off the bridge. Sure I can toss the spinning setup underhand and get it out there but I can flip that baitcaster even better and a lot more accurately.

Personally if you like the feel for the baitcaster over the spinning reel better, then use the baitcaster. I think its a matter of personal preference. It also has a LOT to do w/ the quality of the gear you're fishing. You can't expect a cheapo $20 walmart reel to perform like a $300+ reel like a calcutta or steez (not that i would ever use my steez for squidding <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Sorry I should have posted up earlier but I had a busy day......

I got about 1/3 bucket last night (Wednesday). My most productive night so far. Had several doible-hookups too. Was there till 2:30 even tho I didnt plan on it. I left them piled up down there, too, I just had to get going to get a LITTLE shut-eye! I was almost wishing they would go away so I wouldn't feel bad about leaving! I hate leaving a bite.....

Dn't know if the 6 yr old will want to go in the rain. We'll see Best of luck, oh yeah, talked to a couple that had just come back from GI only a couple caught there as well. why?? Salinity? Temp? Moon? Tide? Bacteria? Bait? I guess thats why they call it fishing not catching!!

We just got back with the boat where we fished at the Jamestown Bridge (Not the toll bridge) and got skunked. No squid. Lots of bait. Talked to another guy in a boat and he had the same luck. He said his dragger friends were not doing well yet and they thought the water needed another 2 or 3 degrees higher.

Snaildarter
What a unlucky day it was to me!

I fished between 7:00pm ~ 12:00pm(May,8)......got nothing on the bridge <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> ....

But I saw some people who have luck and skill managed more than 10 in this time, I guess.
Thursday night was bad. Caught nothing. Didn't see a lot people catching anything. Drove almost 2 hours. =(

Don't let it discourage you. The first year I fished for squid, we got skunked on our first 3 trips and also had to drive over 2hrs each way from CT to RI. Keep at it and you'll get them. Looks like i'll be bass fishing this weekend in the rain <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I should have clarified that I'll be FRESHWATER bass fishing. I have about 20 spots I go to in CT and NY. This weekend I'll be up at my house in the catskills doing some fishing.

I have a secret lake in CT that i get to fish on rare occassions. I'm convinced it holds the state records for LMB, Pickeral and perch. So far my biggest bass outta there was 8lbs 14oz (pic in profile) Problem is it's private and the landowner is rarely around to give me access to it. It's never been fished by anyone and none of the fish have been caught (with the exception of the ones i've caught) It's the best fishing spot i've ever been to in my life..hands down. I'll go up there and consistently pull 5lb largemouth out all day long

Squidsss, it's the very beginning of the run... they'll be there next week I promise.

Fried up a few squids from my last trip... a friend of mine made "Squab" which is a squid tube filled with crab meat.

There is also, apparently "Squab delight" which is the same thing wrapped in bacon.

See you guys on the wall next week!

Unfortunately, the stripers and blues are invading our waters right now, I respect your positive attitude, but I am not too sure we are going to see any strong runs this year. I hope I am wrong.

Travis, are you still planning to go to NPT on Saturday? If so, where are you launching your boat? I am still considering going. It depends on the weather I guess. I have a bimini top, but if it's pooring before we even leave the launch, well!!!

It is still a possibility, but the weather doesn't look good. I launch alot out of Westport River, but the forecast is for some slop. I have never launched inside Narragansett Harbor, I am thinking about Fort Getty. I have a 23' open CC, so if it is miserable I won't go. I don't know what to do...I need squid for shark trips later this season, they make a great pitch bait.

I'm looking for squid for bait as well. Fluke bait and porgy/seabass bait. I don't get to go offshore much, especially with my vessel! I PM'd you with some VHF details, give me a shout if you do go. Good luck!

You too!
how steamed up would you guys be if you heard that some fishermen are keeping tight lips about certain fishing spots to divert other people from fishing at those hot spots? last year i heard rumors that sakonnet point was off limits to fishing. now i hear rumors that it was never fenced off from public access. i heard that some people caught a lot of squid there by snagging and using scoop nets.

I don't know about the fenced off part, but there was lots of squid 2 years ago. Definitely not last year.
