Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
Size, Generally the Females are larger than the males, I guess size does matter
Actually, the body of males are thinner, sharper and larger than females. Males are more like "Arrow" shape.

And females are more like rounded shape.

When you clean the female squid, you'll see eggs around the top of the body.

Thanks, Are the eggs allways there? Or is just this time of year, part of the reason for the migration?
I still say tomorrow night will be the first insane night. Hopefully it'll be tuesday though. Just booked a room at Howard Johnsons about 3 miles from GI. I looked around the net , then called and got a room w/ 2 beds , fridge and microwave next to the pool and hot tub so i can relax in btwn fishing sessions. All totalled it came to $70!

That being said, i'll be up with a buddy of mine so if anyone wants to meet us tuesday, i'll be the big guy (likely wearing camo hunting gear to stay warm. I'll make sure I print up one of those name tags too.

Now it's time to see what I've got for lighting <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> W/ all i had going on this weekend I completely forgot to look for my lanterns. Might be fishing in the dark tuesday

Has anyone tried today at GI
I went down there this afternoon, and it wa svery slow. There wa sa good 15min blitz last night. The two people next to my friends, and I, managed to slam about 15 squid one after the other. That is when I decided to call it quits. Some nights I feel like you either have the squid mojo going for you or you dont.
From yesterday...

Got there around 2pm. Jigged the beginning of the bridge for a couple hrs...nothing. No one caught anything from what we saw. Headed towards the middle of the bridge & 3rd or 4th cast, brought 1 up. Then another, but lost in the water.

About 2hrs go by with nothing, we head to the car to warm up a bit & eat some grub. Casted a bit along the wall & managed to get 1.

Then my father n law brings in 1...then another. Another 30min or so goes by & he just goes ballistic...catching squid after squid after squid...there were about 15 or so people (est) in a line...he caught around a dozen before me or my friend could get our 1st. The guy is just insane. I guess over 20 yrs of squidding will reward you with good squid karma <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

I wasnt really looking elsewhere while the quick run was going on (hope everone around us did ok too). Jig after jig, for a good 15-20 min or so, nonstop action. Double hookups, raining ink on my face & clothes, getting pricked by jig hooks...gotta love it. It abrubtly stopped...and we got a few stragglers after. And decided to call it quits around 10. Between the 3 of us, around 3doz. Still not thick...but much better than the last 2 outings. Thats all for now...hope everyone is catching.

Johnat & Suzie squid. It was nice meeting you guys. Thanks for the tunes. Much better than listening to generators all evening. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

See you guys next time..

By the way, how did you end up doing after we left?
Thanks to Buster Blue and his lighting we did fair. Suzy caught the most around 1:00 am. We left with just under 2 dozen. Fried some up today and of course delicious. We wil be back Wenesday with our son's.

What town? thanks in advance.
i took a drive down today around 3:30 today just about when the sun broke out... it was still windy and bit cold... i didn't see too many people around... i was there for about 10 minutes and did not see anyone catching anything...

I was there milling around in my all black carhartt snow suit nice and toasty!

from about 1300 to 1700 and only saw one squid landed. No one I spoke with saw any all day. It cleared up nicely. Too bad no squid today.

If you're asking what town the hotel is located, it's in middletown. It says it's 3.3 miles from GI. I'm not 100% on where we'll be fishing just yet, but in all likelihood, we'll be on the bridge
Squid: The other other OTHER white meat
Saw an article in the Providence Journal about a fisherman catching 3 jumbo flying squid measuring 6 feet long off of Block Island. Now that would be a catch from GI!!!

looks like we had a water temp drop in newport. Saw it was 49 [Image: madrun2.gif]

For those of you that have been catching squid, have they all been coming on 4" pink yozuris or has anyone used a different size or color? Are you using a single jig, double, triple...etc?

My brother gave me a bunch of tiny yozuris that were about 1" or 1.5" long. I have a feeling these might work well.

green was deadly last night
I went up this afternoon to GI. Sun kinda peeked out but wind was howlin. Most everyone I seen there was fishing center of the bridge on wrong side. (warmer not lookin into the wind). I managed 2 squid in my 2 hrs there. Went for a break to find some local chow, and truck overheated bigtime. thermostat stuck closed. After a few hrs of cooling dowm and removal of thermostat, I return to the bridge but didn't stay as long as I wanted. 2 hr ride home and I wanted to make sure truck wasn't hurt to bad overheating. My weekend catch was 14 for 2 days fishin. But I did find out that was still more then the Francis Fleet got last night. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

Can't wait for lil warmer water.
Hey Squid Light King, you ever use coleman's? You should check out these reflectors I made to shine 100% light below lamp. I've made 4 extra's if interested. Made of aluminum sheet metal polished to a mirror on the underside. What a nightmare polishinig them. I'll try and post a pic if I can figure out how. Some of you fellow squiders probably have seen me there the past few weeks.

Hey Pearldiver,

That reflector sounds great! I've been using one on my coleman that I made out of Aluminum foil, it gets crinkled up too easily and I don't I get the kind of reflection you probably have, looking forward to seeing yours.

I know I'll be down to GI next Fri & Sat, but I'm not sure if I'll get there sooner. Are you planning on next weekend?

Most definately, all I know is I better do something nice for the wife! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> (Mother's Day). If it warms up this week, friday will be my choice.

they reason i ask is because on the drive home from squidding with friends the car can get pretty ripe and the driver a big guy, keeps saying its the squid

I went there 5 times (60miles from GI). nothing last night, was there from 8pm - 9:15pm

So like busterblue said .. squids are about $180/lb ...
