Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I WENT EVERYWHERE!!! I was probably a good 5-7 miles off shore. Drove literally around the whole hyannis harbor. It was so pitiful. I saw people fishing off these walls of rocks and I saw him fish 1 the whole day. I followed the Sea swan.- 1/2 day Fishing. No one on there boat caught anything. It was crazy!
I usually look for calmer running water with pilings, rocks, reef, signs of nursery/sanctuary...etc - this is where the squids come to lay their eggs. you'll get better hit between the calmer and the running water. If fishing at night time, please allow some time for the lights to do its magic. Please survey the harbor in the day time before making the attempt to navigate at night time...it can be very dangerous if you're not familiar with the harbor.
Hey Squidaholica thanks for the tips. I don't ever fish at night. Only early Am. Around 5 or 6. I fish from 5am- 2 pm and nothing. We went to harbor and slept. I know when squid hit. They hit everywhere not just the rocks, and stuff. But I just want to know when schools have hit the bridge.
Anyone know exactly where on the Naval station they have been fishing?
the guy next to me just got one and I think they getting a few off the wall
Are you reporting from a cell phone on the bridge?
Has anyone noticed a predominant color or style to be more effective? I'm bringing my girlfriend and her little sister down tonight and would like for us to get a few. Thanks for any info.

Hi everyone!

I'm also another crazy squid fisherman. I have been going to Newport every Spring and Fall for past 7 yrs. Since I live in NJ, to get there is a quite a long ride.....

I am heading there on Monday and fishing on Mon afternoon and night. I may fish on Tue.

I am hoping to see all of you at the bridge. Please say big "HI" to me when you see me. I will be wearing a green pants, blue Jacket, and G-Loomis hat. Also, I will be carrying a dark blue "Shimano" cooler box.
I was on GI from 10 am til 4 PM about 4 or 5 guys had a brief stint of action off of wall. Maybe 30 squid caught in total. Alot of down time; although it is good to know they are here, just waiting for bite to get better.
windy and cold .... let's hope it's good runs tonight.

short guy, wear redsox cap with two fishing poles.
I just got back 30 mins ago from GI, man it was cold. Went with my uncle and his son. We altogether caught 25 squids. Now my spring has finally started. I might be there Saturday or Sunday night again.
HI~everyone

I went to Goat bridage around 7:30 PM, and went home at 8:40

Today, I got ONE squid around 7:45, then got nothing= =

The wind is very cold, and I'm hungry, so I went home early

It's so happy that I got 1 squid

it's not enough, but it seems hard to get tonight

Maybe I will try later~~

Hope everyone can get more squid!!^^

Sorry about your bad luck today. I'm sure everyone here appreciates your up-to-the-minute reports though. The action should be coming soon. Best of luck on your next trip.
How is it going all. This will be my third year fishing in Newport. Being a Rhode Island Native, I am upset I did not know about squid fishing earlier. The past 2 years I have only fished at day break into the night. With a new work schedule, I will have to fish during the day. How is it during the day versus at night? When do people tend to fill the buckets easier?

Thanks and see you at the bridge or in Jamestown
I will be there tonight with the generator.

N.
I was at GI last night from 7:15-9:30 along the seawall. Never saw a squid. There was a brief flurry where some guys down the wall from us caught a bunch at once and then there was nothing. Well it was an excuse to smoke a cigar.
