Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I don't plan on letting float around, was going to hang it straight down like others do with a lantern and have the light just touch the water so I can keep it under me. The wires look sturdy enough to hang with it.
OK, Folks. Last night was my first some what productive night of the season. Although, the squid are not as thick yet. I did notice a few schools off larger squid. Started catching around 11~12 pm. Caught a little over a dozen. Dont get me wrong, it wasnt gang busters out there, but, was able to snag enough for a tasty meal. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> This weekend could be good for those who would like to fish the bridge without the massive crowd. I will certainly be out again tonight. I am eager to be there the first night theycome in force. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

I'll be heading down there tonight. I'm gonna try to wear a hat the says "SquidFish (Dangger)" on it. Come and say hi.

Probably taking a day to two off of work to fish during the day. I hate dealing with the crowds.

Good luck everyone!

ps. I've been wearing a yozuri squid jig on my shirt all morning at work. Hoping to focus my squiddy ora. That jig is gonna be hot tonight =]

HAHA good luck! I am pumped! My first trip out this season!
Has anyone tried the Bristol area around the Mount Hope Bridge area?

My nephew goes to Roger Williams College and has invited me to fish there with him.
Tatonka,

I'm going to cook them right at the beach again like last year. .... get your tummmmy ready

Travis...

Hahahahahhaha Used cheap gas last year, I hope my generator treat me well this year

Good to see everyone again... it seems like a date, only happen once a year <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> ....

I will be there tonight

Anyone have any thoughts on East winds? I've never had much luck with finfish in east winds. Sometimes it just shuts the bite down, or seems to. I wonder how squid will react to it? Are the squid definitely attacking the jig as a food source or out of anger, etc?

EAST you catch the LEAST

WEST you catch the BEST

I don't think squids attack the jigs out of anger, but more as a source of food. Sometimes they hunt in pack, surrounding the jig and attack from different angles to take their prey (jig) down. I noticed they do this when they're feeding, but when they're full, you can have the jig in front of them and they won't bother to look at it. I found that the best feeding times had been AFTER when the conditions are windy or rainning because food is scared during those conditions...meaning bait fish don't come out to play as much as they do in calmer conditions. The longer the adverse conditions, the more the bites afterward.

This is purely my observation for the last 20 + years of fishing Newport/Jamestoen area. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
Thought I would say Hi to everyone, Will be down tonite or tomorrow night. Just printed my name tag to look for other members.

Jim
it seemed the few times i made it down to GI they really weren't biting the jigs , most people were just snagging them as the schools went through. The best night i ever had was in the pouring rain.
has anyone ever fished on one of the party boats for squid . For 40. dollars it seems worth it , to not have to deal with the parking and the whole light set up etc.

Squid are unpredictable; I too had one hell of a night in crummy conditions

I remember a night maybe 2~3 years ago, it was windy and pouring buckets. The water was so choppy it would splash up onto the walk way. People were catching them like mad.
