Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
Went down to GI causeway yesterday afternoon and again this morning. No squid yet (at least no one catching any). There was a lot of little bait fish (shrimp hatch?) on the surface. It should all start very soon!

Skane

p.s. No port-a-potties or extra trash barrels out yet!
Tatonka,

I haven't speak yet, so there will be no squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub' /> ... you know how it is ... anyway, I will be there friday nite.

Bob and Lynn,

Have you 2 visite GI this year yet?

I know, I have been waiting for your return. I'm giving tonight a chance. I may see you on Friday.

Happy Squiding
I'm thinking of coming up with the boat on Saturday. Probably around 5 and then into the night. Sleep in vehicle at some point Saturday night/Sunday morning and then head back out Sunday to try some daytime squidding! Maybe try for some blackfish too. Maybe even some fluke. If the squid are close the fluke probably aren't too far behind. I see fluke is open year round! Is that true?
I'm not sure about the legality of fluking right now. I know they said there's no closed season this year but I would check w/ the DEM first. Honestly I wouldn't even bother b/c they're not going to be there yet. They are just now starting to show up several hours off shore and likely won't be near newport til the water hits 57-60degrees. If you did happen to get lucky and catch one, chances are it'll be a shorty....especially now that they raised the regs AGAIN <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub' /> I did see that the water temp in newport topped 50

The squid prefer newport over greenport for its rich heritage and historical significance. They tend to show up around tea time which generally speaking is around 5:15pm.

Sorry that was too easy to pass up <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub' />

Mino, try the pier across from the airforce base a little north of Wickford. Check a map. You will need a boat but can launch in Wilson Park. There's parking and it's a short run to the pier. We did very well there two years ago. Snaildarter
What road to take to get to Newport from I95 (from NY)?

Should I take 102 off I95 to 1 to 138 (Google maps)? or 138 directly off I95?
Andy, take 138 directly. Snaildarter

How would you get onto the base? I'm too old to enlist. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub' />

Unfortunately you need a military ID. Some have gotten on though by saying they are going to the officers club or the bowling alley. Best of luck.
I just bought that exact same light. But the light doesn't seem to stay in the foam housing, and noticed they are all like that at the store. But at least the light bulb will be replaceable and should easily last 8 hours on a marine battery.

wont' the floating light cause congestion when jigging. What are you going to when people start hitting your lights and getting tangled?
anyone going tonight?
