Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I am using light (6 lb test) line from the weight up to the bottom jig. (I like using three way swivels to tie the lures to the main line).

Since the ejaculating squid send the line spinning I figured it would be a good way to avoid twists. Since what is on the bottom is the weight, I am guessing that most of the time it is the weight that is getting snarled up, and having a fuse to the weight in the form of a 6 lb test line would guarantee my 14 lb test, tied lures will make the cut, at least some of the time.

I guess another strategy would be to step up the lines test as you go up so if a bottom lure is stuck you risk less of losing the ones above that are tied to higher line strength.

I am thinking too much.

Have fun above all.

And tentacle Wrestler, you owe me a guinness for coming up with your username.

Wow 6lb test huh? I'd never go that light. I don't ever worry about losing jigs b/c it's never happened to me. I like having the thicker line on so i can hoist them over the rails quickly. I never fish total bottom either. Ive had all my luck fishing either a few ft. below the surface or a few feet above the bottom. If you don't let your weight sit on the bottom, the chances of losing a jig are VERY low. I bet it is fun to catch them on light line though.

DrC,

Who are you to demand a Guiness from me? Skip a (single) Guiness, I'll buy you an entire 6-pack! (and pass along a few less crowded spots along Cape Cod to try when the Rhode Island scene dies down.)

Tight Lines!

T.W.
I just talked to my pops. He was down there from 4pm to 1am with no luck.

He said he saw them swimming, but they weren't biting. Although one guy did manage to catch one.

3. to eject suddenly and swiftly; discharge.

No offense but I used the word correctly, and it is not limited to discharges related to reproduction, it can be applied to things like what I was talking about.

Glad that you found it amusing...
I guess my rational behing 20lb test was that I didn't want to lose any jigs at $10 each... P-line sells a co-polymer line that feels like mono but claim is low stretch. Maybe I will try that to try and get the best of both worlds- less tangles and bite detection.

As for mackeral, I like using the 1/4 to 1/2 oz diamond jigs that have the singe hook embedded, seems to work better than the full mackeral tree rigs..
I use that P-line on all my rigs. My friend owns John's Bait & Tackle on Frenchtown Road in NK and he'll spool it for real cheap. I caught the 32lb striper pictured on my profile w/ the 15lb P-line. Started using it for fluke and am very happy w/ it. Hopefully I'll see how it works for squid in a few days. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/images2.jpg' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Yeah, I was just really tired and bored, and when I saw that I just burst out laughing... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> You people made my day.

BTW, Tatonka, thanks for the info! It's probably old english or something similar, but it's still really cool to dig up different (obscure) meanings of words. It gets extremely entertaining at times.
Enough grammer already, who's got Squid?
Went there this afternoon 4-6pm and got nothing. There was 4 other people there already and they had nothing. As I was leaving 2 more cars came and it looked like they were getting ready to camp out for squid. I'm going to try again Friday evening.
I have a underwater like this one (http://dsp.imageg.net/graphics/product_ima...685963p275w.jpg) I used it last yr. It says I need a 12v battery, but it only lasted 1 hour.

Only an HOUR! Yuck. The thing must draw too may amps. I use a car light and speeker wire. That thing wiill last all night. If you see me give me a shout. I will be at the end of the rock wall with the battery.

Last year I rigged a couple of 150W halogen fog lites on lightweight stamped steel- the stuff they sell at home depot with all the holes in it. Ran them off of a 12 v battery... The ran all nite on a charge and it was easy to lower them as the tide went out.

I used one piece of 4' stamped steel and bent it into an "L" with the foot being only about 6" and took a 2nd piece and bolted it to the foot mounting the lites on either end of it. Ran the wire that came with the fog lites up the frame and put clips on the ends to make it easy to attatch to the battery terminals. tied a piece of cord to the top of the frame to make it easy to adjust the height above the water of the lites themselves. It was brighter than a coleman, quieter and lighter than a generator; but alas, not as BRIGHT.

Busterblue that is Brilliant! What did the whole rig cost you?

I'm always at the rock wall, I find the bridge to cold and windy. Plus I have more luck on the rock wall.
A squid engaged in any other activity would be as fun to catch
I was planning on heading down tomorrow night with the generator, but it is a long haul if there are no squid. I was hoping to see someone post a few squid caught last night to give me some motivation. I am at a loss...
One sure sign that the squid are in is that this forum goes silent. I noticed that the past 2 years...Not sure why but my guess is that everyone is out having too much fun to be on this board.
SHHHHHHH, we're scaring the squid. Be quiet, be very very quiet.

squidhound, I had most of the stuff in the shed. fog lites I'd never installed, battery from the boat, cord, clips; all I needed to buy was the steel which cost less than $10.

The water temp hit 52 testerday ad did not go below 48 last nite. Think i may go tonite

I'm thinking of coming up with the boat on Saturday. Probably around 5 and then into the night. Sleep in vehicle at some point Saturday night/Sunday morning and then head back out Sunday to try some daytime squidding! Maybe try for some blackfish too. Maybe even some fluke. If the squid are close the fluke probably aren't too far behind. I see fluke is open year round! Is that true?
does anyone know of any other squid fishing sites in RI besides Goat Island? I heard that some people were fishing at the Newport Naval Base, some place in Jamestown, but where?

What road to take to get to Newport from I95 (from NY)?

Should I take 102 off I95 to 1 to 138 (Google maps)? or 138 directly off I95?

shsss......Can't post guarded information like this on a public forum. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub' /> (you already know what would happen)
