Greenport, Li Ny Squid Season 2008

[quote name='ttbeachbum' post='11084' date='Apr 30 2008, 10:56 AM']Andy,

I agree with you regarding mates fishing instead of assisting the patrons.

I also agree 20 squid for the entire boat is not worth the gas and fare price.

Judging from lack of report from Viking after 4/25... squid fishing must be really suck there.

True, what did he post one report?? They posted that the squid were in but haven't posted that they caught anything.

The other forum (NorEast) is saying that the bluefish are spitting up squid. I believe that's the end of the spring run.

Viking posted their first 2 squid reports on their own site as well as on noreast.com, then nothing after that. If they're catching now, I'm sure they will let the whole world know. Yes, bluefish is everywhere now from Jamaica Bay to Peconic.

Wednesday April 23rd

Captain Dave reports a good night of Squid Fishing last night on the Viking Star. The squid are here. High hook on the boat left with about 20 Squid and the average catch was between 10 and 15 Squid per man. We are sailing again tonight at 8pm and there are plenty of spots available on the rail so come on down

Night Squid Fishing .

Thursday April 24th

Squid Fishing was very good last night and all signs point to a continued improvement. For the second night in a row fishing improved as the night went on. The addition of a Swordfish Light which we hung from the side of the boat helped draw the Squid off the bottom. Around 9.30pm the bite really turned on with one angler catching around 40 Squid. Night Squiding is expected to break wide open in the next few days so bring your buckets!!!. We are sailing tonight at 8pm on the Viking Star and there are plenty of spots available so come on down

nopes, I just quoted what they reported. I generally found they could "stretch" a report, but haven't seen them making up one. Viking fish the Fort Pond Bay at night, could check it out if you know someone there.

Since you're from MA, you'd have much better chance finding squid in your neck of wood (RI or MA). Long Island water right now is infested by bluefish, so bring your bluefish gear if you want to try. If you want to hop on party boats, there are some in Jones Inlet/Pt Lookout or Freeport.

Check out the current LI fishing report with this link

I haven't tried since friday night April 25. Doesn't sound like anything is going on at all still. I might give it a shot this friday night May 9...but if I get skunked again, I'll probably close the book on another non-existent squid season.

Please let us know how you make out, to save us the gas money.

Heard on noreast.com that Riverhead had tons of dead bunker in the creek that were pushed in by the bluefish, so the I guess the catch there might be either bunker or blue. Have you tried fluke yet? Shouldn't fluke come in before the bluefish? This year is really strange with the bluefish coming in so damn early.

Will certainly report back...

Haven't tried fluke yet this year...the season should be opening May 15 from what I hear. I usually get some blues mixed in when i go fluke fishing early in may in southold bay...but sounds like this year could be even more blues than normal.

I'm really hoping that we still have at least a week or two of squid run...but sounds unlikely.

Yes the bunker are very thick in Riverhead. Husband and his buddy are out there as I type (I am at work); They are suppose to take pixs. If they do, I will post.

I can confirm the post about the bunker in Riverhead. It was actually quite disgusting but I went with a snag hook and got around 2 dozen live ones to freeze to use for chum and bait for this season. The bluefish must have pushed them into the back bays so if the bluefish are in already then we might not really get a strong hold of squid...

......who knows at this point!!!
