Bummer. Were you on the railroad dock or the marina docks (or both)? I'm heading out tomorrow night to give it a shot.

Same last year. Spent the whole night there only got 5-6 squid. Not worth the gas to drive there (10 gallon*4 = $40). Only 2005 was hot when I filled half a bucket in couple hours, nothing compared to RI area.

Hi JP,
Since you did squid fishing last October, maybe you can share some of your experience.
I share mine. I only did once squid fishing in Fall couple years ago while I did Spring squid quite some time now. What I observed is - in Spring squid seldom come up to surface, usually down near bottom, and if they do surface, only couple of them swim by. But in Fall (my 2 day experience) squid come up to surface in a large school (30-40 squids). My only Fall squid experience was an accidental trip that I went out to a local pier (Western Sound) at midnight to snap bunker, and to my surprise saw a large school of squid right under the pier light. No jig, I just dropped the treble snag into the school and snagged maybe half a bucket for 2 hours of time. Went out to the same place next night, the school came back with maybe 1/3 number (10-20) and spooky. Only snag couple then the school was gone. Didn't try jig in Fall. So in my opnion, Fall could be the better time since they are schooling at surface and feeding.

Im hearing all the reports of no squid but its so beautiful out today that I think I will go anyways. Estimated weather for 9pm shows 59 degrees with winds dying down from 8mph to 3mph by morning... yay!
Good luck!

Was on the marina dock last night with two friends and a big light. We were there from 9:45pm-midnight and caught ZERO. Didn't see a single squid either. Very little bait in the water...one or two baitfish here or there. One small school of baitfish would come and go occassionaly. That's it.
Didn't sound like the guys on the railroad dock were doing anything at all either. I am not going back until next week at the earliest. Maybe two weeks. Very disappointing...but it wasn't for lack of trying.

We were on the Railroad dock last night and also caught zip. We were speaking with one of the boat captains who said he was netting bluefish earlier that day. No sign of squid; I guess that is the end of the non-existing squid season in Greenport. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':clover:' />

Don't get discouraged, it probably hasn't arrived yet. It's still a little early for greenport no? at least from what I remember.

Not if the Bluefish are in; Other reports throughout the Island are posting bluefish are in too. I think it is early for them too... but they are here <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':clover:' />

Hi,
Did you mean no squid for the entire boat? or just no squid for youself.
I was on a Viking squid trip last year, and caught less than 10 squids myself. All mates were fishing in the stern and caught more because they are more experienced. I learnt a lot by watching what they doing, but in my opinion, they should help out the fares (tangles...) instead of fishing themselves. IMHO, not worth it judging by the driving time and gas money.

I give up Greenport already, not worth the gas money and drive. Montauk/Viking was not doing good either according to one member's post.

Andy,
I agree with you regarding mates fishing instead of assisting the patrons.
I also agree 20 squid for the entire boat is not worth the gas and fare price.
