met up with my friend Tony at 2.00am saturday morning at the marina gates for a snapper and sweetlip session at mud Island.
the wind was only 5 knotts s/w and we thought this would be perfect....boy were we in for a shock.
on the way out to mud Island we hit something but just shrugged it off as a crabpot float and just kept going....we were in for another shock thewre too.
once we got out past St Helena Island we copped it good with 20+ knotts of s s/w and a mtere of slop but we shrugged it off too and kept going...it pays to be crazy fishermen.
we fished our first spot for bugger all so we made a move to another spot and things looked up.
we were only there for about 15 to 20 minutes when one of tony's rods buckles over and makes that zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz noise and after about a 5 minute tussle he lands a nice 63cm snapper...nice...(bastard)
we picked up a few undersize pinkies and wobygongs and other crap that were all released to live another day.
as daylight broke we could see what looked like an overturned boat up on the reef on the south side of mud Isalnd....mmmm...thats odd...maybe it broke it's moorings in the strong s/easter last night and went up the reef??????
we kept fishing and got a couple of small sweety's and the wind had picked up to be over 20 knotts so we decided to pull the pin and go take a look at this overturned boat before we head in.
well as we got closer we were shocked to see large lines running down the lenght of this thing.....Tony says "I think it's a whale"....I said " I think your right" and as we got over close enough without goig up the reef too sure as shyt it was a humpback whale ... big...dead...gassed up belly.. yep it's dead allright.
so we snapped some pics and headed back to the harbour.
on the way back in I said to Tony.."I told you we hit something on the way out...you killed a f#cking whale"..lol
the whale had rope or net around it's tail so that would have been it's downfall.
R.I.P Moby.
but on the bright side as we left we were heading a course that we would not normally travel on and found some new groud...thanks Moby.
