Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 11-10-2009 met up with my friend Tony at 2.00am saturday morning at the marina gates for a snapper and sweetlip session at mud Island. the wind was only 5 knotts s/w and we thought this would be perfect....boy were we in for a shock. on the way out to mud Island we hit something but just shrugged it off as a crabpot float and just kept going....we were in for another shock thewre too. once we got out past St Helena Island we copped it good with 20+ knotts of s s/w and a mtere of slop but we shrugged it off too and kept going...it pays to be crazy fishermen. we fished our first spot for bugger all so we made a move to another spot and things looked up. we were only there for about 15 to 20 minutes when one of tony's rods buckles over and makes that zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz noise and after about a 5 minute tussle he lands a nice 63cm snapper...nice...(bastard) we picked up a few undersize pinkies and wobygongs and other crap that were all released to live another day. as daylight broke we could see what looked like an overturned boat up on the reef on the south side of mud Isalnd....mmmm...thats odd...maybe it broke it's moorings in the strong s/easter last night and went up the reef?????? we kept fishing and got a couple of small sweety's and the wind had picked up to be over 20 knotts so we decided to pull the pin and go take a look at this overturned boat before we head in. well as we got closer we were shocked to see large lines running down the lenght of this thing.....Tony says "I think it's a whale"....I said " I think your right" and as we got over close enough without goig up the reef too sure as shyt it was a humpback whale ... big...dead...gassed up belly.. yep it's dead allright. so we snapped some pics and headed back to the harbour. on the way back in I said to Tony.."I told you we hit something on the way out...you killed a f#cking whale"..lol the whale had rope or net around it's tail so that would have been it's downfall. R.I.P Moby. but on the bright side as we left we were heading a course that we would not normally travel on and found some new groud...thanks Moby. thats fishing ru 12 mug Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 11-10-2009 that's something that you don't see every day i wonder if it was one of the whales that was in the bay earlier in the week? nice snapper fish'n'chippy Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 12-10-2009 I'm amazed where it wound up , did it swim into the bay with rope/net in tow or did it drift in on the tides??? got me stuffed. did see some nice squid in the harbour before tony arrived to let me in the gates though...6 nice big ones...and yep..didn't have a jig with me....aint it allways the way. mug Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 20-10-2009 have since been informed that the fisheries towed the whale there and anchored it down to let it rot away. what a burly trail it's going to make and my mate is hitting it thursday to check out the action...half his luck...bastard...sux to be me...at work. mug Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 20-10-2009 during the last week there was a segment on the news that confirmed the whale was dumped there they called mud island "their dumping ground for carcasses" Whale Of A Time - glen - 21-10-2009 might attract some big sharks! watch out! Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 21-10-2009
during the last week there was a segment on the news that confirmed the whale was dumped there they called mud island "their dumping ground for carcasses"
nice!!!!! mug Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 21-10-2009 up here you don't need a dead whale for sharks just head over to the "4 beacons" and start burlying in the past i have caught plenty of whalers, tiger sharks, hammerheads and 1 great white (not the best place for a dip) <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Whale Of A Time - glen - 26-10-2009 I was right about sharks liking dead whales! See article below. Dead whales may be luring monster shark - http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/920274...g-monster-shark Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 26-10-2009 Glen saw that in the paper yesterday , thats one BIG bite there ARE some real monster sharks out there , like the tiger that took 13 feet of hammerhead in one bite and the guys on the flybridge that saw the tiger said it was like a bus. mug Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 26-10-2009 fishing off flinders reef before it was a green zone, i had a tiger come up under my 17ft boat and it poked out both ends. mind you i was burlying very hard fishing for hammerhead sharks (this tiger was more than i bargined for) another time off the 9 mile reef we trolled past a turtle that was over 1m across, about 10m past it we heard a crack like a gun shot, turned around and there was only half a turtle. needless to say, i don't swim where i fish over the years there has been periodic reports of a 5m+ great white seen around moreton and in the bay, maybe it has found it's way back Whale Of A Time - glen - 27-10-2009 I didn't know sharks eat marine turtles! Eeek! Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 27-10-2009 the mouth /teeth of a tiger shark are designed exactly for that purpose up north you can find them hunting shallow water around beaches where turtles come to lay eggs Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 27-10-2009 the 5 metre ones dont bother me too much but the ones that are another 5 metres on that DO!!!! they are out there but when they get real BIG they dont look at fish for meals and hunt things like dolphins , turtles , rays , baby whales other sharks oh and us. I've seen some rippers in my time and there's no way on earth I'm going diving in those places.......they can have them. mug Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 27-10-2009 it starts to get sporting when they decide that they want the burley bucket, had a couple think that the outboard leg would make a tasty snack sharks are still one of the most exciting fish to chase when you have them feeding, a bait won't last 10sec gotta love the the sound of that screeming reel Whale Of A Time - bluewaterhunter - 27-10-2009 I dare say that in 10 years most sharks will be off limits to us anglers....gummy sharks the only exception. Whale Of A Time - fish'n'chippy - 27-10-2009 i've always just chased them for the sport always tag / release Whale Of A Time - ru 12 mug - 04-11-2009 had a nice tiger grab and shake my motor on 4mtr tinnie up on the reefs , busy dehooking a fish and all of a sudden the tinnie starts rocking like mad..WTF!!!!!! and here was a tiger trying to eat a johno. scared the f#ck out of me... mug |
