Hit the water as the storm came in, saw a couple kings in about no more than a foot or 2 of water, saw me than spooked out. didn't have any bait besides pillies so i put a couple out on floats and tried my luck....



10 mins into it i decide to light up a cigg.... have a look .. oh ###### where is my float?

jerked it back pretty hard and managed to hook it, wasn't sure what it was at 1st was acting weird, thought it was some weed pulling along the surface.. was a nice squid



second float went off, tried the same method with no luck so i brought my bait back slowly and another squid was hanging onto the pillie, put the rod down and tried to get it into the net, no luck..



ran to the tackle box and put on the yozuri shrimp hunter for the 1st time, got it in the water and the squid ran off, scared the ###### out of it.



threw the float back out and started flicking the jig.. the dead bait was going off constantly, jig got nothing.



im convinced the jig i have just isn't any good or the way i fish it (takes forever to sink)... i don't do much squidding these days, been a good 4 yrs but i remember i caught plenty of them on a razor back with no problems.. do they still sell razor backs? ide kill for a few of the smaller ones (blue and pink if i remember correctly) think i might invest in some baited squid jigs.





in summary, caught 1 large squid, a few large ones around, all hood around the size of a forearm.

Jetlag,you should be able to get a hungry squid on a jig,you need to improve your technique with jigs.Do not drop them on top of the squid

yeah i deffinatly need the pratice. you guys recomend any deadly jigs? i really cant dig the action on the shrimp hunter, sinks slow as hell.



ive tried the sharp jigging style ( saw in some jap youtube video posted here) and it has a great action, goes in all direction, even got it to almost go backwards at one point. but nothing would touch it.

More is sometimes less effective.That sharp jigging action attracts the squid from a distance and makes the jig more 'visible'.But if they are already close a lot of times just 'drifting 'the jig with the current will provoke a strike,right now in the harbour is a really tough time to get ANY squid though.

shrimp hunters work a treat for me in morton bay (brisbane) I shave the weight off and counter balance with a bit of solder wire (easy to bend) around the shaft on the barbs so the jig sinks very slowly.

Most of my fishing is sight fishing and they are fussy and easily spooked , so I always cast well beyond them and then sneek the jig into eye range , if they don't respond straight away I give the jig a little twitch or two and then that gets their attention.

I've found that jigging action would only spook them and the most effective way is lack of action . I've had to perfect a few different ways of catching these sods but once I got my sheet together the results are good.
