Flashing Light Sticks

Hi all, my first post on these boards.

I'm living in NZ & recently I got to see some DVD's made by one of yours, Brendan Wing ( Winga).

There was a fair bit about catching squid so I got interested.

I'd never targeted squid 'till then but had my first "expedition" last night.

Nothing to report, not even a nudge but I'm keen and will persevere.



When I purchased the 3-4 jigs I own, the shop assistant persuaded me to buy a flashing green light.

It's about 5 cm long & the mainline goes through a line feeder arrangement.

There are a couple of protruding pins at the back end & when they come into contact with moisture ( water) the thing starts flashing, stops when dry.

The blurb tells me it's good for approx 100 hours use so that's pretty impressive.

It was great for knowing where my lure was on a dark night like last night, also looked pretty groovy to 3-4 other guys who saw it in action.

My mate ( another newby) wasn't so impressed & kept his distance, reckoned it would scare everything in the water including squids.

My question, is this a recognised method or should I dump the thing?

I would not bother myself! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> But then again, once you find the squid you can try the light on them and see how they like it! First trick though is to get that first squid!!! Was there any ink stains on the jetty where you were fishing?? That would be a good sign if squid are being caught in the area or not. Look for black "squirty" stains on the wood!

So, Brendan sent you a copy? Good stuff.



Re flashing jig's / strobes, I've never had any luck with them, and

their now at the bottom of the box. Much more luck with jig's that

glow when lite up with a torch. Even just the eye glow jig's seem

better.



Good luck with yor squiddy hunting. Great live bait for your

Try early am high tides just b4 sunup.Much easier to learn when u can see the squid coming for the jig

Thanks for the replys.

I've never seen anyone squid fishing in our harbour & can't say I've ever noticed ink stains.

I have talked to a couple of guys who fished out of a boat & had sucess, also told about a jetty that used to have a large light ( now gone) that used to produce.

So I guess the things are about, just have to keep on keeping on <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />

Our next mission is planed for Wed night next week when the high tide will coincide with darkness.

Will be deploying plenty of berley this time & there should be 3-4 of us.

I have an underwater flounder light that puts out a fair bit of candlepower & am thinking of pressing that into service.

It runs off a 12 volt motorcycle battery & is good for about 3 hours.

Squid are very quiet last 5 days in Auckland. Get down to Orakei, along Tamaki Drive wall to Mission Bay and Takapuna/Milford coast. Tide doesnt really matter except Tamaki Drive but try for no swell and light airs.



If your in Auckland friday night 6-12pm at Orakei will be a good time to watch and learn.



Last week I got 17 in 3 hours only 2minutes drive from downtown Auckland City!
