It has been awfully quiet. Â Anybody been out and tried catching any? Â Last year we were catching them beginning of October.

Should be pretty soon if not already. Going out in the next day or two looking for ink!

Caught 10 of various sizes, but slow and hella bright moon.
[sharedmedia=gallery:images:1040] REDSOX asked if one could use a jig with a treble hook, and BillG said it wouldn't work. Well here is a commercially made jig from the early 1980s made by Spofford Tackle from a plastic tube, imitating the popular home made jigs of the day. Before Spofford made these jigs we used similar ones made from a 1&1/4" or 1&1/2" piece of 1/4" dowel rod, painted it white, and installed a screw eye from the hardware store in each end and put a treble hook in one end. We caught buckets and buckets of squid with these jigs, and they still work. I occasionally still see a yankee squidder or two in MA using one of these although I prefer the modern "shrimpie" style of jigs myself. It is no problem removing the treble as BillG states, one simply holds the squid over the bucket by the line and one gives a short jerk on the line and the hook tears out and the squid falls in the bucket. No more inking than using a modern jig. No problem with the barbs. I just thought REDSOX might like to see this and perhaps some others may wish to try a very cheap way of making a jig that works. Sometimes we painted them orange or pink once we figured out that sometimes they would hit a color rather than a white one. The next modification was to use a jap jig hook from a commercial japanese jig and put it on the dowel without a lower screw eye by shaving down the dowel to fit inside the hook and epoxy the hook on. I still have a few of these around if anybody would like to see photos of them. The multi prong hooks did work better than the treble, but when they were thick and hungry the dowel and treble worked just fine and still does.

Always nice to see what old-timers used. Although, even older-timers probably just put a net between Newport and Goat Island and just scooped them up! Anyone been out lately? I was thinking of going to look for some squid/herring, but my season of being too busy during the day and too lazy at night keeps on continuing.

Hi Bill, I don't know about the Newport area but they were catching daytime squid in Edgartown yesterday so I would think there must still be decent action in RI.
Hey Bill, it's been slow at goat island. Was there last night from 7pm-11pm caught about 70pcs.

If you are looking for squid jigs, go to http://www.oceanstatetackle.com in Providence RI.  Dave (owner) is a nice guy and carries thousands of jigs!

Was out yesterday day day and only landed 5. Â It was very windy and didn't feel right. Â Haven't tried night yet. Â Anyone tried night lately?

Went last night and caught half a bucket of giant tubes in 2 hours. Â Feels like pulling up fish. Â Bright moon and not many squiders!

Due to lack of reports, this will be my last post and report:Â
Yesterday in Jamestown the squid were in heavy and we raked in a full 5 gal bucket. Â They were averaging 8 inches, but the biggest caught were 12 inches. Â There were many shy squids. Hot color was pink on the rising tide. Â Tonight is going to be hott with the winds in the low 3mph. Â I'd say start wetting your jig at 4pm and dry it out 11pm. This year's squid session is very late, but it should be strong for the next week or so.

Quote:Due to lack of reports, this will be my last post and report:ÂHey OneEyedSquid, I went the week before Thanksgiving and caught almost a bucket the first night. Â The second night was not so good..barely half a bucket. It's so cold to stay late at night now. Â Plan to go again if the squid are still there. Â Don't stop posting man. Â I was so busy I forgot to post here last week.

Last thur, just under half a bucket in about 2hrs. Excruciatingly slow Sat night. The wind made it very cold. Lack of squid even colder lol. About 30 between 3 of us. If you can brave the cold and put the time in, you will jig some up. Good luck all!

Gonna wait for all this fresh water to drain out of the bay before I head down to join all y'all.
Last year around now there were teeny tiny hatchling baitfish everydamnwhere, little see-through stringy wiggly guys, sand eels maybe, super attracted to lights...  anyone see these little dudes yet? |
