Mono Or Braid?
#1
Hello, Long time fisherman here but just getting into catching squid with a rod and reel rather than shooting them with a spear gun. I have been reading through the forum and getting information on rod size and type, line size, reel size, and jig color. I am going to Japan on Thursday and plan to pick up a rod and a few different jigs there. The reel I can get on island, but I was wondering about the line. Which do you prefer mono, fluorocarbon or spectra? Granted spectra is more expensive, but is there any distinct advantages in using spectra for catching squid or is it not that big of a difference.

Thanks,

Jay

What is Spectra? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

In Japan you'll find that PE (braid) is the way to go. People used to use mono but that was years ago.

My gear is all Daiwa. Reliable but not so fancy (at least not in my price range) I use Emeraldas Sensor Super PE in 0.6 which is 12lb and leader is usually 1.75 (7lb) or 2.0 (8lb) fluro

Hi zed, Thanks for the info on the Japan lines. I will be in Kanagawa on Thursday and plan to pick up some gear there. Spectra is the same a braid. Super thin and strong. How much 12 lb line does you reel hold? Probably a lot. Also I was wondering, I am sure you join the braid to the mono with a knot but do you also tie the squid jig on the end of the leader or use a snap swivel.

Thanks

I usually only wind 90m on but it will take a full spool of 150m. We use swivel snaps because over here we tend to rotate colours a lot.

You can also use the albright knot to join braid to mono. The advantage of braid is that it doesn't have any stretch thus making you feel the bite sooner. I use PowerPro braid for all of my fishing.

Power Pro is good stuff. I have it on my jigging rod and shallow bottom rods. I wasn't sure on the test until now. Guess 12lb is good enough for our shallow water reef squid. Last time I checked it was $27.00 for 300 yards at the store on island.

Sounds about right. Check ebay, you may be able to find it for cheaper, and try the new red.
