Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season)
#21
hey everyone.. I am completely new to squidding...picked up my license yesterday and a very jigs. I was told that this is the wrong season to get them.... but is it still possible to find them? I live in port orchard..a buddy and I went to waterman ridge in port orchard last night...no luck..saw some herring down there. been thinking about hitting up bremerton and brownsville. is there a certain line set up that works best for people? my buddy was rolling with one lure while I rigged up like four. maybe our jigs were too big for this season? they were the typical ones you get at wally world. thanks for any advice guys :-)
Personally, I think a little early. Kinda inbetween runs right now. I would expect maybe around the middle of June over there. Port Orchard, Bremerton, Waterman, Brownsville, all good locations over there.

If the squid are thick and agressive, several jigs to a line are OK. If they are not, I find the smallest jig, and only 1 jig to work better. We have a pretty good run of squid during the summer, and the squid are usually on the small side, so jigs about 1"- 1.5" total length are best during that time.

Hey guys,

so when does the summer season kick in?

Also, is there squiding on around the westport area?

thanks

I would expect you can start getting summer squid around mid june, expect them to be fairly small. Can catch them anytime of day/night, EXTRA small jigs are best. Redondo was fairly good last year, but overall, from the reports I had, the Bremerton/Port Orchard areas were best.

For Westport, can target the Humboldt squid in September, they will occasionally come in close, on the rare occasion even in the Westport harbor.

Humbolt?? Really?

I never would have known that. Are there charters for that kind of thing?

Are they easy to target on our own? From shore? Kayak? (dont own a boat).

thanks

Hey Tomcat,

Any pole will do and you don't need anything except for a jig really. Depending on what jig you use, if it's unweighted, most people will put a small ball weight on a bit of a leader below the jig. I personally prefer the weighted jigs. Might want to use a light trout rod if you have one.

I might be heading out soon to try the summer squid. Anybody head out recently and catch? Hopefully this winter will be better than last.

I just got a report a couple days ago from one of my customers. He's been doing VERY WELL on squid at the Seacrest pier at Alki. Middle of the day.

For the summer squid, you will have best results using the very smallest jigs, about 1"-1.5"

I haven't heard anything specific on tides during the day. Just that sometimes you get a big school that comes in, other times it's just individual squid. I haven't been out myself yet, concentrating on Salmon and Crab right now.

this might be a lil late or way too short notice or not even the time at all... I am really interested in doing some squiding and have been reading on areas to go... but nothing recent has popped up... I'm in the mill creek bothell area and was looking to go to the edmonds dock or mukilteo but have no idea what kind of luck I would hit at either one... and I don't know where to buy any jigs... I've looked in a few asian stores, as I've heard they have them but I can't find any... I have some family up and a few days off... can anyone point me in the right direction? and help a newbie out?

Hi, actually the timing isn't too bad. Although I haven't any reports on the North end. I have several customers that have been doing fairly well at the Redondo Pier, also at the Bremerton Passenger Ferry dock. Summer squid, you can catch during the day or evening.

As for jigs, most of the local shops don't stock many jigs until fall "which is the normal squid season". I have a large supply of squid jigs available, but you'll have to come to Auburn to pick them up, as most of the ones for summer season I don't have available online. Feel free to give me a call 253-529-0294

Thanks for the response! Does the Seattle dock do anything? or does it have to be over in bremerton? Do you have a store in Auburn? If so where are you located. Depending on what happens I might try and shoot down there tomorrow.

I haven't heard too much in Seattle.. The Seacrest Pier at Alki was doing good earlier this summer.

Here's my contact info. I should be in most of the day tomorrow, just give me a call to make sure I'm in. I'll be out the rest of the week fishing.

Well went squiding today... drove down to pick up some jigs and then made my way over to seattle to catch a ferry over to bremerton... Missed the ferry by just minutes so decided to walk down to pier 62 to try my luck there as I had just spent 30 bucks to park for a few hours... not a single thing... my brother got a bite from a fish but was only able to pull up a scale from the fish... we drove up to edmonds and tried it out there... we weaved in and out of about 60 fisherman on the pier up there... called it quits at about 415... skunked today but I'll get back out... I'd really like to get out to bremerton adn try it out there...

hey new to squid fishing, I'm wondering where might one go if they have a boat, also any tips would be nice.

PS: wold really like to go for humbolt

Hey i was wondering when squiding off of Les Davis peir in Tacoma starts up? I live right there and cant wait to get squiding. And i was also wondering what pound test of line to use. I just bought a reel for tuna fishing but didnt get to use it. i really want to use it for something but it has 50 pound test on it. Is that way to much?
#39
Haven't heard anything about Les Davis pier lately, but Redondo and Dash Point piers have been doing well on Squid.

For taking your boat out for squid, just bring a flood light setup so you can attract the squid. Most areas in the South Sound should be good.

If you want Humboldt Squid, you'll want to get out off the coast like at Westport, and fish for them at night. Can be found during the day too, but have to look harder for them.

Been having no luck lately <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Bremertons ferry has some new rules since end of August.

1. Everyones kicked out by 10pm now. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

2. Can't squid by the boats anymore. All fishing is done at the end of the dock now. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

3. No lamps allowed either. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

I tried brownsville the other night with my girlfriend and a couple buddies. Not much luck there.. about 3 pieces of small squid from 8:30pm-11:30pm.
