Day Or Night

I have been having success with early morning or late evening catches but reading in the forum there are others who talk of fishing at night for squids. Is fishing at night more productive during the day?

Fishing at night can be good under bright lights. Otherwise I would not bother <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Depends on the tide. I have had luck untill midnight on a spring tide.



I've only had luck during the day from a boat or with autumn juveniles.



Certainly, dusk and dawn are the best.

For me ,fishing by night is generally more productive . My best sessions have been most often by night . But on the other hand , for the cuttlefish , the best moment is unquestionably at early morning .

I'm fishing squids since a long time ago and i have made this finding but in Mediterranean sea the tide has a very low amplitude , maybe in your oceans the favourable conditions change ...

Thanks for the response. I have a small 16' boat that I use to get to the squid spots which are usually in the lee of a big rock or small island. Seems I catch the most before 10 am and on a high tide. Catch the big ones on the pink Yo zuri flash dancer 3.0. All the others on the regular orange 2.5.



If I were to try at night with a light over the side of the boat (I have that Q-Beam halogen) would it be best to cast out and retrieve the egi back into the light or just jig around the light? Probably end up doing both just as during the day when they chase the egi to the boat.



Hey Zed, Thanks for info earlier on the rod and reel set up. I got the Sephia BB 8'6" rod with the 2500 reel and 150m of .8 PE. Really fun to fish with.

sunset is best for me. night is hit and miss <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I did hooked a massive squid or cuttlefish once at night, it was so heavy and was spraying water everywhere, but I failed to land it coz it was too dark to see <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Yes. I have mates who often catch them when fishing for aori. Usually fishing on a sandy bottom. Good eating but less fight than aori

was using pretty light outfit and didnt expect to encounter anything as big, must be 5kg+. I was also fishing along at a rocky shore, so didnt want to risk falling into the water at night. if i had my girlfriend with me, or my big snapper net, i would have got him <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

yes, and is a valuable tool for personal security, a few weeks ago, I slipped on a rock, fortunately without damage, I have trusted too much about my knowledge of the spot, not considered the fact that I could not see where I was walking (I did not have with me the headlight)...

Absolutely night time is better, especially if you have some strong lights on the boat. When I went squidding in the Philippines, we got out some powerful lamps at night and the squid got so thick we could catch them with a net. At the end of it, we literally had buckets full of foot long cephalopods. We caught nothing in the daytime though.

You can fish squid all the time but in winter when the water is cold , they come near the edge in low depht and it is more easy and productive for to practise this kind of fishing .

When the water is warming up , squids are still present but in a more high depth and it's more difficult to have good results .

Where I live, squidding is limited to a couple of months in spring and autumn. But if you go south of here, there are places you can catch them all year round. In the Japan sea you can get different types of squid at different times of the year, though summer tends to be the off season.

In Mediterranean sea , winter is the best season for squidfishing , it is possible to search them in summer but in high depth . Cuttlefishes are more present in spring . You are lucky in Japan to have several types of squids during the year <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> .

Rough conditions made tough fishing yesterday. Tried early morning and afternoon in another spot and brought home 4. Lucky to get those. The squid were hanging deeper than usual and hard to entice. 3 to 4 foot surge and 20 to 30 knots of wind. Had to try it out though. So now I know. Squid don't like rough conditions.



What are the conditions like when you have the best catches.

I don't think squid hate bad conditions so much as it's very difficult to fish in bad conditions. Big squid are very wary of unnatural jig movements and in strongwind the line gets blown around. Especially using PE line, even the slightest line movement is transmitted to the jig. I'm not sure about the effect of the surge though. I don't usually fish in areas that area exposed to the effect of durge.



Certainly I think that a less than 3m/s wind is desireable.

You are very right. The line was getting blown in a big arc because of the wind. To try and keep the line straight on the retrieve I would keep the rod tip as close to the water as possible. After a few goes I would even keep the rod tip in the water as I jigged the egi back. This method produced the biggest of the 4 squid, but difficult none the less.
