Newport, Ri - 2009 Squid Season

I'm new to this site and was planning to go squidding. I'm in Providence RI and newbie to squidding any suggestions from you guys.

Wait until mid October when the newbie squids seek deeper water and leave the bay. the squid are smaller so use very small jigs. Dress warm it gets cold.

Why the silence? All of you who are familiar with Suzy squid and I are most likely fishing for stripers and blues. With that said you all know that there is an October run of smaller squid.



Spring 2009 was not a good year for us (Suzy and I). Many of you who to do well squidding have been silent (Tony, Allen. Spawnie, Buster Blue where are you, mike ct and the camper familiar plus several others who's faces are embeded in my mind but who's names escape me).



Anyways we go squidding to visit the people whom we have become familar with and consider friendly even though we know nothing about each other, and that's what entices us to travel 90 miles one way to go squiding. It is not so much how many squid we catch but how much fun we have trying. We have never left squiding GI disapointed.



We are planning our October visits and hope to see you all.

John (and Suzy), You are right about that! But I hope to make some time to come down this fall and hang out ...maybe even catch some skwid. i caught over 100 squid last saturday. i think it's the time for fall sweet squid.

[color="#0000ff"]Brand new to the forum. I just moved to Newport and am trying to apply my experience of squid fishing from Puget Sound. Fortunately, I live about a mile from the GI Bridge so I have a productive spot nearby. Tried to go this evening, but the RI Police had cleared the bridge of all fisherman for security reasons relating to an event at the Naval War College. I spoke with a police officer and he said the bridge would be reopened on Saturday as the event is supposed to conclude Friday night. . . this info might save disappointment from those folks travelling from afar. If I find that the bridge opens sooner, then I will post an update. Anybody else know if/when the bridge will be reopened?

[color="#0000ff"]Just came back from the GI Bridge. . . the police are gone and there are lots of people trying to catch squid. The parking lot was full. Most are 4-6 inches. Not a lot being caught, but enough action to stay in the cold to try and catch some.

Went out last night caught 1/2 dozen. The Newport toll has doubled to $4.00.

Only me and 2 other brave soles were at the gi bridge on friday. The storm surge and winds were tremendous. The waves were breaking over the side of the cement wall. It was freezing a constant gust of 25 knots blowing conbstantly in your face. The tide was so strong. The fishing made it all worth my while. I was fishing a certain area of the bridge got maybe 30 squid. I then moved and set up my lantern. I then dropped my jig and for about 20 minutes the blitz was on. I did not even had time to move my jig and a squid was on. I would drop my line and reel it in with a squid on. These were not the small fall squid either. They were large more like the spring squid. I got one about a foot long not including tenticles. After 20 minutes it slowed down to about a squid a minute. At this point i switched to striper fishing seeing that my cooler was full of squid. I ended up speeding down so i could get some of the smaller jigs from the bait shop. when i got there it was closed. I guess they closed early due to the bad weather. I was bumbed out thinking i wasnt going to catch anything. The night ended up proving productive I was satisfied. It was one chilly night. I found that a violent jigging action was not very productive. A quick jig up followed by a few short jigs then i would let it sit for a few seconds and do it over. They seemed to bite when i let it rest for a little. While reeling in your line to reset jig it on the way up anbd when it gets to the surface jig it about 6 inches under the water. I caught alot of squid site fishing. They would follow it up from the bottom. They were picky and by watching them i learned what action they liked better. There is only about 4 spots to park. Good luck if you go down... Bring gloves and extra clothes.

[color="#0000ff"]Ted - welcome to the forum. Squidding has been pretty good lately. All you need is a light spinning rod with 8-10# test line, some small weights, and some small 3-4" squid jigs. All colors seem to be working . . . check out the online store at squidjigs.com as they have a great selection of jigs as a reasonable price. Also bring along a few weights in case the squid are on the bottom and you have to sink your jig when there is current and/or wind. Most folks use a coleman-style gas lamp (around $25 at Walmart) and hang it on a rope from the bridge raining to attract baitfish and squid.



Most of important of all - DRESS WARM at it can be brutally cold when it is windy. If you are lucky and it is warmer than normal, you can always peel of a layer of clothes.



All the folks I have met on the GI bridge are friendly and will give you tips on how to catch squid. Just watch them, it is easy.
