i thought about that... i guess i'll give it a try... another thing i was thinking of is to spray paint the hooks black so that they don't reflect any light... it seems that the squid of very aware of relective metallic objects and just gently tap or nudge the hooks... i'm wondering if they don't see the hooks maybe they'll actually go for the jig bodies and in the process have a more firm grab on it... worth a shot right?

I was thinking of picking up some squid jig hooks on ebay and making a soft body jig. Use half a slugo or rubber worm something like that. I've seen the squid attack the jig from the side and quickly swim off. I guess the hard jig body is a turn off.

i had the same thought to trying some soft plastics with the jig hooks

it's worth while to mess with a few plastics, shads, sluggos, ect. from what i've seen the squid attacking while fishing i would think something small and narrow would work best, ie sluggo. the question remains is it the action of the jig or the texture??

Some ideas I have:
I have some squid jigs covered in silk for the soft texture, but they don't seem to work as good as the hard plastic 3.5 inch yo-zuri jigs.
They sell squid jigs that you can put bait inside of it, it opens like a clamshell. I say someone try that on the FF boat next to me but that didn't seem to work for him.
For the soft plastics I think that you might be more successful if you could figure out a way to give it neutral bouyancy.
I've thought about tying a squid fly around a squid hook, I might do that for next season because I have to learn hot to tie flies first. LOL can you imagine fly fishing for squid?

Agreed, spot burning is a big no-no. Especially since thousands of people read this thread daily. Some of my favorite spots in the past have been shut down due to others ignorance.
If I dont know you, I usually wont share the gems. Its fishing code 101. (even bait shop owners wont tell you all the hot spots)
When it comes to new spots, I sometimes just take an afternoon driving around looking for other anglers already fishing. Or, pull up google maps and look for easy shore access. (just watch the trespassing, been in hot water before...remember, its legal to fish the shore up to the high water mark....)

I havnt been out the last couple days. But the Providence river, Seekonk river area has been producing some nice size fish. With the Pogies around it has been killer. Early morning has been most productive IMO.
Also, gonna try for some squid this weekend. Will post results.

Is it me? Or does their seem to be more attitudes, and egos this year than in years past on this site. I would ask you guys with the "I'm better than you" attitudes to tone it down. Don't forget that we are guests on this site!!! I don't want the guys on the other side of the pond to think that we are just a bunch of simple minded americans. Take it easy on each other.

i've been fishing for years and there are some "unwritten" fishing codes that you go by, but for the most part i've viewed this site as a place for newbies and experience fishermen to get together and share ideas and expand the hobby/sport (whatever you want to call it) of squid fishing. certainly it's alot of fun to catch squid so i wouldn't want to hold out on one of new england's great past time, that would just be selfish. i do ask that all persons respect our fishing spots/shorelines and take out what you bring in in terms of trash (bait boxes, old hooks, OLD LINE) and help keep these places open for everyone.

all i will say on this, is the slight attitudes are due to the lack of etiquette and respect i and some others here have received from the swarms of new people on the piers at the respective spots. i'd much rather be a the wicked nice guy i really am but sometimes it just can't be that way.
i just happen to be one of the more vocal people here, i know for sure there are many others here who feel the same way i do. i'm not trying to be a martyr or leader be any means, i am just 'keeping it real'............
as with all things when it becomes 'too popular' and YOUR spot is no longer fishable like it has been for the last 6+ seasons you have to protect some of your info.
no harm is intended, just do your homework. if i happen to be fishing next to you i'd glady shoot the breeze with ya, hand you a beer and talk about fishing and techniques. but i not blowing up anyones spot on a message board that thousands of people read

I'm with some of the others on this one...
Spot burning in my book is a big no no. We all have the same passion...fishing. So sure, we all would like to help ea other out. And we can, by other means. But to mention specific spot-on places in a public forum that can be read by thousands of people...imo would do more harm than good, especially in those areas with minimal parking & fishing space.
I have put my time in (and continue to do so), & have been skunked plenty of nights while many other times, have struck gold. Was this luck brought on by someone directing or leading me to the secret spot(s)? No. Just time, patience & perseverance.
Ive met some of you in person, and all seem to be very pleasant people. If I run into one of you guys/gals out there while fishing, I'd be more than happy to shoot the shyt. As far as Kingsquid...he's a cool guy, and can fish too. One of the more real, down to earth folks Ive met out there while squidding. But I dont think I'll be fishing next to him in the future because I cant seem to get any squid in my damn bucket...they all fall off the friggin jig.......lol j/m bro.
Anyhow.... I know some people just want to hear about "a report" lol, I dont blame ya!...so here's a short one from someone I usuallu go squidding with:
Last night 7pm-midnight, not gi. Mostly smalls...smaller/med jigs. Almost a full bucket...I beleive he was using a 10g if Im not mistaken. He said it was one of his best nights of the yr, if not the best.

Fist of all Mr Local i asked a simple question about fishing in Jamestown i wasnt looking for your secret spot just general area, like earler someone asked where do you catch scup in Newport,and someone kindly replyed and told them, you seem to get upset when someone wont tell you where they get their jigs,if you dont fish at Goat Island like us locals call it (not GI) why are you posting on the Newport thread anyway,Why not start your own so we dont have to listen to all your negative comments
