no not you... i'm talking about the guys at jamestown... my friend and i have asked several of them about where they acquired their jigs and all responses were the same "i purchased them from a friend"... c'mon there's like a zillion squids out there and you're afraid that others might actually catch a few or so... speaking of greed... they actually have the nerve to come fish next to our light and give us a lame excuse... just one of my pet peeves... if i see that another fisherman is struggling or so i would never hold back from giving some advice about my experiences or techniques...

Oh ok...sorry about the confusion then. I havent gone for squid in over 2 wks. But from what Ive heard (coming from someone I normally go with), he got the same response when he asked these certain individuals where they got these "magic jigs"...So thats funny how you mention they said "I purchased them from a friend" lol.

The bait shop on RT 4 on the way to Newport sells them for about 10 bucks. The bait shop with the trailer with Pats players breaking threw them. They have pink, white, blue color.
I stopped by a bait shop in Cranston, right on Pontiac ave before Bain middle school. They have a really good selection of squid jigs and color. They run about $6-$8

Scup are in thick in WH. We got a few fooling around on the boat saturday- some about 2-3 lb. I've never seen them that big.

For some reason, I recall hearing something about wide/straight hooks, which would lead me to believe they are the "spyder" variety. And also a "dab of red nail polish", as someone reffered them to, similar to the bottom one of Jon's post. A Whats the oz. for the weighted ones?

i got the same answer from those guys last night. one of those guys is a real jerk off.
much agreed on the struggling fisherman bit.

there were a bunch of noobs out last night, all were very nice which was real cool to see. i had a 6yr old noob with us who struggled but caught her first squid. the smile on her face was priceless when she was reeling it in. my crew pulled some decent #s last night. mostly smalls, perfect for the table and topped off the freezer. LOTS of squiddies still around, not too aggressive though.
unless the wife wants to go again this season i think i may be done for the 09 season, almost fluke time. have already been killing the stripers with a few blues mixed in on the south shore beaches.
on a side note, i have never seen so many good looking girls out squidding before.
has anyone seen anything the newport monster shark & tuna tourney in august??

I had some luck last Nov, after I retired the season from stripers.
Think smaller jigs, as the squid tend to be smaller. Although some med/lrg
mixed in...but for the most part, smalls.

I attend the Monster Shark Tourney every July in Oak Bluffs. Its effing awesome. Me and a group of five or so make it a yearly thing. One of these years I need to enter.
I havent heard about one in Newport before?
Sort of off-topic, but, have any of you seen a show called Whale Wars? I watched for the first time the other night and nearly fell of the chair laughing. The seamanship is atrocious.

yeah i've been using the yozuri with the double set of hooks and i can't believe the number of squids that i've lost... these new jigs have 1 set and these guys are landing them like crazy... it's a rare occurrence to see the guys miss landing one...

i saw something in a shop in newport about it. i havent done too much looking into it yet though.
i do recall a show on espn a couple years ago, a documentry of sorts on the oak bluffs tourny.
the seamanship on whale wars is god awful. i dont know how they have lived this long. not to mention they are out of there friggin minds. i wouldnt trust the firstmate on that boat with a dingy. he is beyond incompetint and has no business being on a boat. i respect the cause and whatnot, but they are a boarder line terrorist group and that is something i can not support. but i will watch the show just for shits-n-giggles.

on the yozuris, the hooks are stream lined with each other. maybe a pair of pliers and offset the bottom circle of hooks. bend the bottom row out so it is not the same line as the top??
worth a shot on one or two jigs before you spend some loot....
