Newport, Ri - 2009 Squid Season
I live near Taftville and have trailered my boat to Fort Adams for the squid run and boat over to the bridge. I have a good time with friends catching squid, half for eats and half for bait. I would not like to have to buy squid but the treks to Newport will come to an end shortly with another poor year. I didn't have a good year as the 2 before it.

Where in Stonington? Sounds like it could make for an evening meal.
Just go down to the commercial pier where you'll see the bigger dragger boats and Gamberdella's fish market (They buy the fish from the commercial boats). You might even try squidding there once the run starts. I've heard guys say they catch in Stonington but I'm not sure if they get them at the docks or out in a boat. Snaildarter
Sounds good. I don't like wasting the night looking for squid and like to go where they are. I would however like to hear of something local but like I said rather go for the real deal. Plus the hike to Newport is kinda like a ritual for the begining of the season.

Hmm still waiting for a response! My father and I might be heading down tommorrow.
how about them patriots schedule huh?? it's going to be tough this year...

are you guys ready to rumble with some squid went out to g.i yesterday saw a couple baby floating around
you guys understand that baby squid need to be born. squid come in to RI sound to spawn. I do believe this species spawns twice a year.. once out in deep water and once in shallow water. I also believe this squid do not live very long. 1-2 years.

This would suggest either a late spawn. or. they have been here all winter long. though i doubt it.

What you said above is accurate. However, like many aquatic species you sometimes find “hold overs” that just do not follow the cycle. Last year was a strange year for squid. I was catching squid throughout the summer into late October. Although, not the numbers of years past.

Oh, yeah, went out for a little while last night. Lots of bait, no squid.

My fingers are crossed for a better catch this year.

4" soft white shad (zoom bait) I believe, on a 1/2oz lead shad jig, dragged slowly across the river bottom.
what brand of lantern do you guys recommend??
Ive had good luck with the colemans...i also have this other brand

i beleive from bennys. Cant remember the name...ill have to chk it

out in the garage. But its been fine too. Only had to replace the glass

globe due to a crack...

But Ive realized I prefer docks/walls so the lanterns will be taking a backseat

this season & i'll be using the generator/halogen combo.

Oh btw, the colemans were around $19 at wally world.

I always wanted to do the generator and halogen combo but that soudns wicked expensive. Any other way we can be super bright and still not blow my wallet. I have a coleman later but the mantles always act up or burn out somehow.
Any new updates?
