I have been in China the last 10 days or so and it has been great so far. I will be here till the end of the month.
I haven't had a chance to do any fishing so far but I did get some fishy pics from a town called Li Jiang where they seem to have albino rainbow trout, normal rainbow trout, carp and goldfish all swimming happily side by side in a spring fed stream that flows through the town.

I have not realy eaten anything very weird yet. Just the usual stuff you would get in a chinese restaraunt back home. though I did try yak cheese, yak jerky and yak yoghurt <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> And I tried quite a few chinese beers but they all mostly taste the same to me <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />
Here are a couple more pics. I got to see my first red panda and giant panda today. And we saw a goldfish feeding frenzy.
Today I had a go in a fishing pond and I caught a small carp. Was good fun! Though I tried not to catch too many since you had to pay for every fish you catch. We did manage to slip one back in the water when no one was looking. hahaha
We brought 1 fish home in a plastic bag full of water and released it in a goldfish pond near where my girlfriend's parents live. Seems to be happy in its new home.
I think I will get to go fishing at another "fish farm" pond tomorrow. I am (surprisingly) looking forward to it! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Hey guys, the fishing pond we visited today was a bit of a disappointment. You could only catch 3 inch goldfish! And the guy running it was pretty rude. He got annoyed when he saw us feeding the bigger goldfish with fish food we brought from home. His idea was you buy the fish food from him. hahaha
Anyway, we gave it a miss.
Shame, as it was quite a long bus ride!
Though at least the buses are very cheap. Cost about 60 cents (AUS) or 3 RMB (chinese currency) to travel for about 2 hours in the bus.
Here is some pics of me fishing in China. You could rent these long poles (as per the photo below) that are already rigged up. They have 5 little colourful floats in a row. Then a small piece of lead maybe half a foot above a small hook. And as the fish pulls you see the row of floats pull downward. I think it is pretty nifty and have never seen anyone back home using them.
And also I included a photo of the little carp that we brought home. They automatically put the fish in a bag of water for you. We let it go in a pond.

Hi everyone,
I went to another carp pond the other day but only managed 2 small carp. Though one guy next to me caught one about 3.5kg. It was a huge fish to catch on a bamboo stick (when I say stick... i mean a stick...not a rod..just a long piece of bamboo!)!
I went to another fishing shop today and bought another fishing pole (the type where there is no reel...just line attaches to the end....it is 4.5 metres long). the lady in the shop tried to explain to me the knots i need to attach the line to the pole and also the knot to tie to the hooks onto the line (they use hooks without an eye over here). anyway, i hope i can remember the knots.
I should be going carp fishing again in the next day or so..... so i will try and setup the rod beforehand. I bought lots more floats, hooks, line and also some other accessories. I got some rubber (soft plastic) maggots/grubs. no idea if they would work or not. anyway i will probably start off with bread dough again and see what happens.
Hopefully I will still have some room in my suit case and i can get some squid jigs in hong kong on the way home <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I have been pretty conservative with the food. Luckily I have not had any stomach troubles so that is a relief <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I will hopefully post some pics tomorrow. I went carp fishing again today but i didn't do very well. This time I was fishing in a lake and only managed a couple of 1 inch fish. They looked like some sort of gudgeon. I only saw one carp get caught (it might have been around 1 kilo). Oh well...I tried!! That will probably be my last chance to go fishing in china.

Here are a couple picks of me trying squid fishing in hong kong. I only had a few minutes so didn't expect to catch much! I don't have a lot of experience with a hand line.
I did spot some small squid hovering around. See pic below. This is a school of tiny squid about 1 inch long. I was at Lamma Island which is a 30 minute boat ride from the hong kong city centre.
I also saw one other "monster" squid about 5 inches long. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> It was enough to convince me to buy a hand line and some cheapie jigs and give it a go!
I also visited lots of fishing tackle stores in hong kong. they were not quite as i had expected. the range of tackle was pretty limited and the prices were not particularly cheap. i think mainland china is heaps cheaper for tackle. Here is me with a picture at one fishing store in hong kong where i bought some squid jigs.
I found that most shops in hong kong only sell big squid jigs, usually in size 3.5. So it was pretty hard to find ones I liked.
Here is a picture of some of the jigs i ended up buying. Some still have price tags on them (hong kong dollars).
Also here is a pic of some of the tackle i bought in cheng du (mainland china). 2 fishing poles for float fishing, an extendible net, some hooks, line , floats and other accessories for float fishing.

i went to Hongkong early last year, and yes their tackle shops are quite different - the ones that stock the "goods" are generally rude and somehow not will to deal with the public - very weird. in some instance, I had to "pretend" to be a dealer in order to get in their shop (more like a stock room) to have a look... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':boat:' />
Their stocks are very different from here. its basically all jap domestic models, and i didnt find any familar fishing rods. was lucky that i found some nice daiwa reels. they do bulk deals so if you order over like $1000 you get 30% off the total <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' /> picked up some luvias for about $240 each with the killer conversion rate, along with enough gama hooks and jigheads that would last a long time <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
