i've been reading the forums on squid rods.
with not having easy access to these rods on the gold coast
i've decided to re-birth one of my old fly rods.
it was a 7wt, cut down to 8' and re guided, the blank should have a similar action and it casts like a dream
due to crap weather i haven't field tested yet, will report soon.

Hi fish nchippy,
I have used lots of rods and I personally dont think you need a top range rod for squid, right now I use a 2kg, 6,6 drop shot Berkley I think its about $80~$100. team it up with a Okuma reel and good line casts a country mile. its the lure that I think where the extra $$$ are worth it.
you can get them @ dugs as well.

i think that you are right.
i've caught squid on fly rods (on flys) through to strokers off shore bottom fishing
the old rod was only gathering dust and i thought it would be an interesting experiment
(truth is the weather was crap and i was bored)
still haven't used it yet
maybe tomorrow

took the rod for a spin today
conditions weren't the best in the 15kt northerly
managed 1 squid and a couple of pike for the afternoon
the rod cast well, good feel through the rod, and takes little effort to tap the jig
it may not be as good as some of the other rods available but i think it was worth the trouble
so if you have an old fly rod floating around give it a try.
