It shouldn't be a problem. I have a Daiwa rod rated 2.5-3.5. I find it a bit stiff for 2.0s though (only use them when desperate) Over here 3.5 is kind of the standard size and even in autumn a lot of people only go as low as 2.5.
I don't have a Major Craft eging rod but I do for ultralight rockfish. It's a good rod, not flash compared to others on the market but gives good bang for buck.

it will be fine, you might find it a bit harder to control lighter egis. the zaltz is a pretty good rod for the money, a friend of mine recently got one from HK and ive had a play with it. you wont be dissapointed. if you really are keen on sticking a lighter rod then look at the yamashita naory rods they are about $300+ and the only place ive seen them is at fish head in brisbane. nice rod but too light imho as it designed more for aarow squid

Thanks guys! What's got me is the cost of the Zaltz. It's only around $200au so it's reasonably priced. Over here my best technique is more of a slow lift and a long pause - not the quick rip style I've seen elsewhere. My main concern was when casting, but if it's fine then great!
One more question. Do you guys use braid joined to a leader or straight through fluorocarbon? The reason I ask is the guides on these egi rods seem tiiiiiiiny and I was wondering whether that would affect casting distance due to having the leader knot travel through the guides. What lb/kg leader do you guys find works best with these small guides? i.e. what's the heaviest you can realistically go?

Thanks. What's the Varivas Egi braid like? I know Varivas produces great braided lines (like the GT casting one) but what's the major advantage of using these "Egi" braids? I was just going to use a normal braid like maybe Sunline, Nitlon or maybe even some 6lb Fireline I have lying around.

i don't know about the squid braid or the rods,
but about the knots
if you are worried about tying an allbright, a double uni-knot will finish with the tag end facing toward the reel
it will cast well but it is a 'lumpy knot'
the allbright is the best for casting as it is a smooth knot and if tied well can be trimmed back hard against the knot itself
however if not tied right it will just undo itself when trimmed short
both knots are basically twice the thickness of the mono

i didn't know if you knew your knots
you may be surprised how many people don't know the most basic things
when i tie an allbright in the lighter lines i tighten it using a set of spring scales
to make sure it is as tight as possible before trimming the tag
if you want to get fanatical, you could always make the leader up as a top shot
but i can't see it being worth the effort

varivas actually have 2 types of egi pe one normal and the other suspends. from my understanding braid floats when dry then as it absorbs water its starts to sink down. the one im using is the suspend model, and as the name states its does suspend a bit in the top water column. apart from being very supple and sensitive there isnt much difference at all. i can also reccomend using varivas pe conditioner on any braid it makes casting sooo much easier.
oh and as for knots slim beauty is good, and also the gt (or pr) knot - uni to uni or improved albright if your in a rush as they are piss easy to do on the go.

I've heard of that PE conditioner? How does it work and what does it do? Do you just spray it on to the spool?

yeah sunline super pe is good bang for buck, the conditioner feels like silicon but not as slippery, not 100% sure of how it helps the line as i cant read jap, but just thought id give it a try. im impressed with it cos i sprayed it on the line over the weekend and left to dry then on monday night went for a sesh and could deff feel a difference in casting

Well according to the can I have, it is a flourine coating that reduces friction between the line and guides and protects the line from continuous casting, extending its life. It also helps to reduce the build up of static and can be used on nylon and fluoro.

Catchnrelease did you end up buying the Zaltz? Im looking at geting one myself but Im having trouble deciding whether to go for the ZAT-832E or the ZAT-832EH. I mainly use 3.25 - 3.5 size jigs but would like to be able to cast 4.0 size jigs too. Does anyone know if the ZAT-832E be able to cope with the size 4.0 jigs?

Wow I forgot about this thread. No I did not buy the rod, I ended up spending all my $$$ on a new exxy jigging outfit (Twinpower 8000SWPG-A on a 5'6" PE5 Catalina rod) after my cheaper one blew up on me big time. I needed it for some charters I'll be doing jigging/livebaiting for small marlin, big kings and tuna.

Warrenty was for only one year and I'd had it for over 2 and registered it with Daiwa so I had to buy a new tip. The worst thing is, I managed to snap the tip off that in the car on my next trip. Was still able to get a couple with it though so I'm just going to clean it up and use it as a short boat rod or autumn rod.
