Squid Jig Feathers

With all the knowledge out there about squid I'm sure someone can give me an answer to this.

What type of feathers are used for the side fins on a squid Jig ?



What kind of bird do they come from ?

Chicken , duck , turkey , dodo ?



I am an incureable tackle tinker ( keep it clean ! ) and love to mess around trying to build home made jigs and lures.

I have tried some feathers from a craft shop but they do not react the same as the feathers on store bought jigs when wet.

i don't know for certain, but they appear to be a type of hackle feather

(most common from the neck of a rooster)

best place to get them is either from a rooster, or a tackle shop with a supply of fly tying materials

craft shops sell marabou or turkey feathers, these are 'soft' when wet, hackles will stay 'stiff'

if you can't find them let me know, i have some

tackle warehouse at cooparoo have them , bought some there a while back to mess around with and these looked like rooster feathers.

BUT.. from a whole feather there is only a small part of it that is any good for squid jigs.

yep it's in the end half...cause it's got flex to act like real legs.
