Hi.

Has anyone used a yamashita egi rod? i can not find any reviews about them or anyone that sells them online. They cost around 300-350 bucks. I have held one before and they seem very light. The gladiator egi rods are good too, but are the yamashita rods worth the extra money? your opinions and shared experience would be greatly appreciated.

havent used one before but have played with one quite a bit, it depends on the squid your targeting - the yamashita noray feeling shaft is designed for aarow squid. if i were to use one i would not be putting any egis over 2.5 on the heaviest rod as they are too light. if your really keen on getting larger tigers or cuttlefish then deff get something heavier. ive never seen the gladiator rods before so cant comment on that but if you can afford deff get something from the japanese brands like majorcraft, graphiteleader, daiko, valley hill jdm shimano etc



might cost you a bit more to import one over but if your keen then its deff well worth it

i would like to import something from japan, i dont mind. The problem is i dont know where to get these rods from. Also i have never seen or heard of any of the above mentioned rods. Before i pay big bucks to import something i wanna make sure its what i want. i want something to match the stradic 2500 2010 model. i mainly fish for squids upto 4 kg. Never more than that. And i mainly catch southerns and arrow squids. i just want the lightest and toughest setup for this type of use. =

you will notice most rods are 8ft and over (anything under is pretty light and tippy) and most rods in the 8ft-8ft6 lenght weigh up to 130grms ish (from my experience all my egi rods have been under 115grms) your 2500 size reel is ideal size so you wont have to worry about that.

i use a g-loomis dropshot rod 6-12lbs and it works well on the yammy squid jigs

Hey there,



I have a Yamashita Rod and a Sephia Squid rod and both are good rods. I have never used the Gladiator, but they look and feel okay. However, one of the guys at the peir has had two break on him and i was there when he broke his second, we was snagged and bulling but no that hard and it broke just above the join. It was replaced due to being faulty. His third one he upgraded toa Yamashita and he is very happy. The Yamashita rods are over priced here. Much cheaper from Japan. I am not sure where you can buy them on the net. I am luckly I have family in Japan. However plat.co.jp have the Shimano Sephia squid rods much cheaper then you can get here.

A good mate of mine had a gladiator rod, it snapped under very minor load. When it snapped we inspected it and noticed that the guides were binded really tight on the blank and actually crushed the blank where the shoes were binded. Turns out that this has happened a couple of times with the egi rods by gladiator. Not having a dig at gladiator by all means as Honsu was there to verify!

I have a Yamashita Naory feeling shaft and have not had any drama's with putting jigs to size 4 on it. Although it is only designed to be used with egi up to size 3 it has not ever been an issue and works the egi fine, I have also broken 2 Gladiators, they are not designed for the fast and heavy egi style fishing, fine if you want to cast a little further and still work your jigs slow, but if you want to fish your egi more aggresive stick to something a bit tougher, the Berkley Egi Master is not a bad rod for this and still reasonably cheap.
