Newport Ri 2010 Squid Season

Finally convinced a couple buddies to take the drive up tonight. Just one quick question for you guys....where's the best or any place to buy squid jigs near jamestown or even on the ride up from CT?



My brother borrowed my entire box of squid jigs and I don't have time to drive to his place to get them back before heading up which means i'll have to buy a bunch of new ones just for this trip :mad



Any advice would be greatly appreciated. hoping to fill at least half a bucket tonight but more is always better <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The best place is Luckys Bait and Tackle in Warren RI. I think they are open until 1800, but you might want to call them and confirm. Ask for Lorraine. The number is 401-247-2223. They have all the new hot jigs and anything else one might need. Good people. I will be in a Grey Nissan Armada with colored dots on the side for my company, www.packetlogix.com stop by and say hi.

Thanks for the heads up, but I won't be able to make it there in time. After doing a search, it looks like the only place i'll make it to before close that I've confirmed has jigs is Hillyers in Watertown. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

got to jamestown/wetherill @ 10pm last night...fished til around 1:20am. The place was PACKED. I'm talking goat island bridge style shoulder to shoulder combat fishing.



My first and likely only trip of the year and I got skunked :mad:



My buddy came along for his first squid trip and got 6. I noticed the majority of the squid being caught were very small (3-4") with some bigger ones here and there. Out of the 6 my buddy took, 1 was a female. Not sure about eggs yet b/c they haven't been cleaned.



Everyone that was catching, were doing so on pinks. My buddy took all his on a single yozuri on a dropper loop w/ 1/2 oz sinker. I had the same jig tied on, but with a 1oz weight. I'm thinking that's why I didn't catch and he did (along with everyone else) It was just one of those nights where it seems you're the only person not catching. Still....nobody was catching in any great numbers and the squid were a bit finicky. Hopefully i'll get out one more time at least. Can't have a goose egg for the 2010 season



I see one thing hasn't changed though. Trash all over the fishing grounds. When will people learn to clean up after themselves.

Im coming from Fall River, Ma and I want to get some action tonight. I would go to GI, like I always do, but it is too far. Does anyone know of someplace closer I can go?

....or if I want to try a new place what areas, and what kind of structures should I be looking for? Are there any harbors, bays, or alternative rivers?

that's really too bad. jtown police and dem will close it off to fishing if that continues.... not fair but thats what happens in jtown, welcome to RI politics.

Fished Ft. Wetherill Friday nite. It was packed. Got a few. Two huge. Most were catching 6" or less on tiny jigs. I got mine on blue 3 1/2 inch. It definitely was "combat" fishing. Some people need to be taught common manners as well as fishing techniques. Knealt down to untangle my line an got squeezed out by two gujys who I could not understand. Had to shove my way back in to retreive my lantern. Almost wish the DEM would come around to check for licenses. Maybe they can spring for parking lot attendants too.

Hey, I got another question for you guys (my location dilemna). I have electric lights and want to be able to use them, without a generator. I saw a guy with a rechargable battery-like-thing. Does anyone know what this is called, or anything else I can use?

You can run them right off an automotive or marine battery w/ aligator clips. Just don't splash on it <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />



Are you referring to those portable power devices? I have one of those that is an air compressor w/ built in rechargeable/portable power source. I wouldn't recommend using it to power your lights unless you don't plan to be out long.

If your lights run off of 110 then you need a converter or inverter (I'm not sure which. Hook the inverter/converter to a big 12V battery and then plug an extension cord into the inverter. Then plug your lights into the extension cord. You can go directly into the inverter/converter and skip the extension cord. Snaildarter

There are two wires (hot and a ground/ red + black) They are fairly heavy gauge like what you would see connected to the battery in your car. There are connectors on the wires that simply attach to the inverter/converter with wing nuts. The other end of the wires are bare and you can either crimp or solder connectors on them which would slip over the small posts on your battery and secured with another set of wing nuts. Now you are in business and you just plug the lights into the converter/inverter unit as if it were a wall plug in your house. I'll try to find out if the unit is an inverter or converter. It's out in my garage and I haven't had a chance to look at it. Snaildarter

Jamestown last night had 4 dozen small to med. Poeple catching scup, some were 15 to 16 inches long. Scup were all over the dock. Might take the kids fishing for scup on Saturday.

Since people havent much to say about squiding... Recently had a surgery on my patella tendon. I wont be able to do anything else but fishing... Please give me updates on anything.
