Newport Ri 2010 Squid Season
is fishing on the old bridge allowed?
no. the real problem is the parking there. its not that the residents have a problem with people fishing on the bridge, it's that the residents have a problem with people parking on their streets and in front of their homes, leaving trash, making too much noise in residential areas....yada yada yada..... and i understand there reasoning.

stripers have been killing it thus far....

making the squid real sketchy, cautious, picky....

for the guy looking in galilee, 'gansett..... pick a dock any dock. bring a striper out fit too for some fun...

Hi everyone. Was planning on a family squid trip on the Frances fleet tonite. But base on their report, doesn't look like they r catching. So I might wait another week. Anyone went out on their boats last nite? Would appreciate a report. Bring a few young kids, so I really want them to catch in order to keep their interest up

I was up there last Wed, 2 squids for the night. The water was very dirty. I remember the mate said that Memorial weekend is the best time to go in RI.

I went on Frances fleet Thursday night. I didnt start catching till an hr before we had to go home. The average catch was about 6 squids. The water was to murky and it still is murky today. I would wait till next week to take your family out, it should get better by then.

Went to GI last night, it was horrible. Average catch was around 7 or 8, I caught 12. Compared to other people it was good, guy next to me caught only two. Im kicking myself for not going last Sunday when everyone filled their buckets.

Also, strangely, for a saturday night GI was EMPTy, there were not a lot of people at all. I may go tongight for a tiny bit, but will definately go next week.

I took my boat up to Point Judith on Friday where I fluke fished in the afternoon (only 2 shorts). Grabbed a bite to eat and then went back out to squid fish. I was told by a dragger's daughter to go 3/4 of a mile off Matunak Beach and that's where the squid would be. Went there and found two other boats. Then the Francis boat came out there and set up right next to me. Then the 7 Bees (another head boat) came out and set up on the other side of me. Water was dirty but I had my lights, chum and all the Yozuri jigs. Caught 4 squid. Didn't see much coming up on any of the other boats. After 2 1/2 hours called it a night and drove back to CT with the boat. It wasn't happening. I talked to some commercial guys who said the water needs to calm down and clean up. Maybe next week. We were in the same group of boats. Were you in the rampage with the tower? We were set up off your stern.

No, we were the 20 foot center consul with the Tee Top Had light s in the rod holders.

I have old shiners (spearing) from last years fluke bait and I put them frozen in one of those plastic live bait holders with the flappyb door on it. I put a brick in there with the bait and drop it to the bottem The bai doesn't leave the bucket but the smell I hope attracts the squid, not the stripers. I didn't see any bait, stripers, squid or anything else in our lights. Snaildarter

have you had consistent success with chumming for squid? i've never heard of doing such a thing...
Reply
I've had success both ways, putting smelly jelly on the squid jigs and chumming. I don't know if the chum does much or if they are there anyways. However, I do notice that when the chum is in the water they sometimes seem to swarm all around the boat. Give it a try and let me know how it workks. Snaildarter
