Newport Ri 2010 Squid Season
I'm curious to hear what other members think are the hot jigs so far this season.
Been nailing the bigger ones on the typical yo-ultra lens...pink, glow, green, dont matter.

And med/smaller ones on assorted small-med yamashitas

FYI YALL

a very large school of large size squid was reported to me just southwest of newport..

It seems they are on the move and looks to make head way into newport and surrounding areas. Expect to have some decent squidding in the next week or so. They are there; or will b there in numbers.. whether the weather or predators push them out or turn them off is another question. BUT. from reliable sources there is a very large school on its way up the coast.

from what it sounds like bass and blues are in full force. be advised they will stop squid from feeding............. catch em up. i am away for the next week.

Large schools of squid along the RI south shore. They are on their way to the bay!

Managed a full bucket last night. I'm hoping things will improve a little in the next 10 days.

has it been crowded there these past few nights? I mean as in people, not squid.

Hello everyone. I haven't been squid fishing very long, maybe for the past three years. In past years, have the squid come in this late? Is there the possibility that the squid may not arrive in the numbers as previously seen in the past? Could there be a dud year? Or is it usually pretty consistent?

see last years thread. There are def. dud years. Last year was one of them. There's no specific time frame for the squid. They show when they show. That typically occurs at this time of year. Don't give up hope yet b/c its still early.

I really hope at least some squid are in tonight/tomorrow. I'm planning on heading up to the bridge tonight or tomorrow morning to give it a cast or 100. I'm coming from long island.

I hear ya...i drive up from CT so its still a solid 2hr drive for me. Nothing worse than making the trip home sans squiddlies.

I think tomorrow will be a better day to go vs. today. Give the water some time to calm down assuming the crappy weather thats hitting CT right now is also hitting rhodie.

Howdy -

There are definitely "dud" years, but you also have to consider that there are "duds" for Bluefish, Stripers, and Fluke also.

Some people experienced it last year. I was lucky. I didn't make it out there all that often, but the 5 or so nights I did go, I filled a bucket each time. One area may be great, while another may be good for nothing!

Tight lines!

I have noticed from past years that peak season is when water gets to 58. It is late this year...only 54 now. I would say about 2 weeks past normal. Who can figure?

Fished jamestown last night. No squid due to the stripers swimming around. Seen a couple little pods but left as fast as they can in. Jamestown state pier had the same with some guys snagging a few. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

The old bridge has been off limits since 2002. There is talk of a fishing pier being build but area residents are against it. If they do put one in it will be some years down the line
