Newport Ri 2010 Squid Season

Had a nice day of catching nothing today. Went for tog around the area then I stopped by GI no sign of squid tons of bait fish scattered around. Went to Jamestown docks no squid also.

KS, you're gonna drive yourself to golf if you try and stop this group from telling everybody where the squid are. (and aren't)... It's just the way we roll.. If it weren't for the crowds of friends and potential friends the past 2 years GI causeway would have been boring.

I have a couple of spots I go to but it is on the Naval station side of the house. The Marina on the Base and Pier 2 where the coast guard cutters are. I drove around newport during lunch and saw some piers just before the Causeway bridge.

My preferred method of squidfishing is by sight (at night) with bright halogens.

Being able to see them react to the jig can really increase the hookup %.



With that said, yes I have seen it where the squid would just hover towards the dimmed

areas & wait for the bait or jig to come to them, avoiding the very bright spots

I've also seen it where they absolutely did not care 1 bit.

I use a dual lamp 1000w halogen lighting setup. There are power settings that allow me to adjust to

just 250w, 500, 750 or 1000, which is good...should they prefer more or less light. Now

If it only had a cutoff that rivaled that of projector HIDs, it would be perfect lol. I say this to all the ignorant,

littering, line crossing, unappreciative people that just roll up next to you like its no biggie.



I've seen setups much brighter, with some great results also. Honestly I think any of the

500w & up shop lights would be fine.



So imo, get the most light you can...you'll never know when you might need it.

I still maintain that GI bridge is visible from space during squid season. LOL I've had my best squid outings the old school way. A coleman lantern lowered from the bridge. THe bridge just got way too overcrowded and I found myself spending more time cleaning up other peoples trash and trying to keep people from stealing my spot during the 2 seconds I would turn around to put a squid in the bucket. Its just not worth it anymore which is why i stick to boats now <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I went to Tiverton Point last night and saw a few scouts at the high tide mark. Tried to jig them up and even use the trebbles but nothing. Same thing happen last year then two weeks later it was on fire

Yes, last year at this time folks were seeing scouts, (bitching about herring <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> )and catching one or two squid. Then May 10th the run started.

Do you like the scout squid? Couple years ago I saw like two squid came out, then 10 minutes later the whole school came (this was in Fall). Wonder where they learn that from?

i already golf, but not nearly as good as i fish...



i'm not trying to stop people from telling others where to go, just do it in private. again, i'm sure you dont want people who dont participate in our forum to turn up where you fish and youre left out in the cold...



we all know the time of year they come (generally), we know how to get them (generally), we know they're in the bay... if you want to squid, go for it. do some homework, read the past few years forum threads, find a dock, any dock get some lines in and go for it, trial and error is the best way to learn. no one should be gifted a prime location for signing up on a message board. knowledge, advice, gear, technique, lights, power are all fair game....



it's happened to me and others on this bored who i have met before. it sucks.

I see Kink squid is already up to his old ways as last year doesnt want to share anything, find it yourself attitude, why do you even post here just go to your secret spots by yourself and let us share the info as this sit in meant to be, that said i went to Goat Island this weekend no squid probable only parking for 6 cars on bridge, i will be happy to tell anyone the best parking spots or other spots to go squidding
