ok, thanks for the replies on my jon boat post. have running lights, looking for a attractant light. think ill buy a starfire 2 because its 360 degrees but worried about battery draw. 3.5 amps will probably draw the battery quick but not sure how fast. it would suck to run out of light when they are finally here.

I usally fish from a boat from under the Newport bridge. There are plenty of people in small jon boats (12 -14ft i would guess) with so much on them they look like they shouldn't be floating ( but they catch 10 to 1). They too aren't the cleanest as far as garbage. I think they don't have room for it on their boats. That must be why it is seen floating all the time.

dude u should go grab a generator at sear only 125 for a 900 watta one nice and small for your boat

just beware.

having a power supply floating and "floating" in an electrical sense can be a serious shock hazard.

You don't want to be cooked with your calamari.



I think it is prudent to run a ground wire from the chassis of the generator to the engine block or something grounded in the water.

If the calamari start floating up on there own, turn the thing off.

There is a Darwin award for some jackass that decided to go fishing with electricity.

needless to say, he was the one that the human taxidermists succeeded in mounting.





DrCiro doesn't want more room on the causeway next year because my fishing buddy's went for a Jimmy Hendricks hairstyle.

In the past before I got LED underwater lights installed on my boat, I used the Brinkmann Q-Beam starfire II you mention. A group 24 750 CCA marine battery would last for roughly 6 hours, not enough for a true all-nighter, so I would bring 2 batteries in the boat with me....not so big but additional weight for sure in a Jon boat.

thanks again for the input. i think 6 hours will be long enough, unless theyre hittin. then ill haveto take the one out of my car to keep fishing and worry about getting home later. i really dont see myself bringing a generator on the boat.

Has anyone tried Jamestowm or Point Judith? With the construction this year, GI will become very crowded.

Jamestown, Ft weatherall, the Navy base, Pt Jude all have produced as well as Hyannis, Onset, mattapoisett, marion, woods hole.....

read last years forum and you will find reports from many of these places as welll as directions and other valuable info.

I had an issue last year with the batteries running dead on the boat. Added a couple of extra batteries and a jump pack. Haven't yet made it to the underwater lights. Soon. I saw some floating lights at BPS for short money, Was thinking of trying them, I think the lights on the T-top are probably annoying to the other boats.

just checked the buoy report again for newport, the water was 52. up 1.3 from yesterday... can that be right?? 1.3 in 24 hours time.... i dont know i didnt study meterology in college. or spelling.....



i've never really paid this much attention to water temp in the past for squid, only for tuna. i just waited until late april and 51+ degree water...



and the guy with the J boat... how big is this thing? i'd say just get a genny. walmart has 'em cheap too. little noisy but no complaints here. 4 year running here in mine. just changed the oil and a splash of high octane gas. 2 pulls later shes running.



it's come in handy a few other times over the past 3 years. just nice to have in general.



and the 2 dudes having words.... i went down that road last year. it's not worth it. glen will end up deleting your posts and no one cares anyway. just dont blow up someones spot. if you got a secret spot, keep it that way. share tips, rigs, advice, and knowledge all day but dont bring the gang to someone elses spot. we only know who reads this by those who post and participate. only god knows how many lurkers just read and show up where YOU want to go fish....

its only a 10 footer, not much room for a genny, ill battery it for one night and see how it goes. ordered the light off ebay yesterday, hope it gets here before the squid

I remember reading a few people say last year that there was a theory that very bright lights didn't attract the squid nearly as well as dimmer, more difuse lighting. Does anyone know wether or not this is true? How bright are the lights on the party/charter boats?

Reading last year's post, one night Frances capt ordered not to turn on light (not to scare the squid) and they were catching good.
