Hey guys, new to the forum. Quick question about squid jigs for a place like Goat Island: When using jigs like a yozuri do you recommend inlining them (chain of jigs attached at top ring and bottom ring) or using dropper loops? Also, for a weight at the bottom would you suggest a sinker or a weighted squid jig?
Thanks for any help!
Hey if you are looking for jigs and are near Fall River, Mass on your way to Newport a friend of mine owns Bucko's Parts & Tackle Service. He just started stocking up on jigs he has a decent supply of yozuri, local made, and some cages for making your own, in all-different sizes. The shop is also a full service reel repair shop if you have a reel needing attention. I had herd the local tackle shop up there by CCRI had closed down so if you like supporting the local guy give Bucko's a look.
For GPS the address is 191 Stafford rd Fall River, Mass 02721 Phone:508-674-7900 Thanks for letting me post this here It is a great hole in the wall shop that caters to all kinds of fishing and anglers.
buckos got some good jigs

Thanks for any help!
Welcome Joe. Personally, I do the drop loops. Usually 2. 3 when theyre running thick. No more than 3. I'll use a 1/2 - 1oz weight. I usually dont go heavier than that unless I'm high up on the bridge or the tide's running pretty strong. The reason I dont do the weighted squid on the bottom is because of getting snagged. Youd be surprised of whats down there at the bottom in squidding/jigging territory. So I like the sinkers. When theyre being picky, try using 1 jig directly tied to the line or attached to a snap swivel. I've found they dont really mind the snap. I use black. Cast out & let it sink a bit. Jerk jerk, sink. Repeat. Vary your speed. Sometimes they grab it on the surface. Love it when they do that. Experiment. Dont be afraid to use different tactics. And if youre superstitious like I am, do what you gotta do lol. Even if you look like a friggin idiot doing it. But if youre slaying them who cares. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> Tight lines <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rod:' />
Hi Guys,
Someone pointed me towards this site a few weeks ago, and I joined up. Looks like a good number of diehard squidders here. I hope this seasons run is better than last years, but only time will tell. The moons are making it difficult to predict the start of the run, could be Late April, could be very late in may into June just like last year. I plan on being out there starting April 26th in Hyannis doing some scouting. Will keep you all informed as to my findings. Sam's is the mecca for squid jiggers. Sam has a huge selection of jigs, and always is dialed in on when the squid are in....you should all make it a point to go see him at 936 Aquidneck Ave. in Middletown RI 401-848-5909. For those of you who don't know it, I do squid charters every spring. If you are interested in more information, please contact me at 401-862-0358.
Welcome Capt Dom. I might just have to take you up on that. Never been on a squid charter. And thanks for the Sam's tip <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />

been looking to go squidding for years. never got the chance. ive seen this site last year and hope this year is better on the water. does anyone think squidding from a jon boat is a good or bad idea? i read about the bridge construction and the littering mongrels of past years have kept me off the bridge.

I don't see why that type of boat would be a problem. You need a light source but if you can fit that in your jon boat AND be stable and safe (the water is only about 50-52 degerees when the squid run usually starts). I'd expect you'll end up wearing alot of ink but otherwise you should be good.

You better rig navigation lites to be legal and have pfd's. You need a stern lite and bow lites you can use battery operated lites and on a jon boat the bow can be a combination red/green

When they were plentiful enough and the limits weren't so low we used a jon boat to fish for winter flounder in the marinas before the boats were in for the season. As long as you mind the weather and have the proper safety gear (including running lights) you should be good to go. Good luck.

Did anyone give it a go this weekend? The weather was rotten but there must have been someone who just couldn't stand another evening of television and bad baseball.

Went out for Tog yesterday morning, stopped by the bridge and one other spot and didnt see anyone catching, nor any sign of ink stains. Will be trying my first time upcoming Sat/Sun night. Will report. Cant wait to see everyone again. Cheers, Tatonka
Hi Andy, diddn't see you much last year. Did you find a new spot? hows the camper? JOHNAT and I wish we had a little camper. We have driven back to new haven many times half alive after squidding all night.
Hope to see you this season JOHNAT and SuzySquid. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rod:' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />
I only went once last year since I was busy. Hopefully this year would be better. On another note, I pick up this sleek-looking Yo-Zuri IKA Minnow jig from Peace Token (Woodside, NY) and wonder had anyone fished them before and how. It said "Weighted squid jig in 4-1/4 inches, with realistic eyes, internal reflective body and a single squid prong. Great for catching squid in early spring along the New England coast." Hey Guys I went out this weekend and saw nothing, its getting harder and harder to find a good tucked away spot where your not elbow to elbow with people. I did book a charter last year with Captain Silvia and did very well, he has the whole set up with lights and only takes out 4-5 guys so we had plenty of room. I will try to find his information or website but it was very cheap and effective.
