Bad Luck On First Two Misses...
#1
Have been trying to catch my first squid for the past few weeks. Finally got one bite the day before and another bite yesterday. No other luck on other occasions. The two bites are exactly the same but the squid got away on both occasions. Jig was thrown quite a distance away, when I reeled it in I can see small brown colour thingy following behind it, thought was a small fish or something as can't see quite clear under the jetty light. Both time the squid only attacked when I almost pull the jig out of the water, last minute they were like almost jumping out of the water to grap my jig I can feel they are hooked but when they are out of the water about 1 foot they squirt the black ink and dropped from the jig and fall back into the water, only leave traces of black ink almost like laughing at me da_n! So far haven't landed any squid yet after so many tries at different times and places. Still looking for that first ever squid. I have a couple of questions though:- why don't they bite the jig earlier only when I almost pull it out of the water? I mean they have so much time following it from such far distance but only bite it when it almost break the water surface?- also will jig size affect the miss? I can see both squid are quite small size when they drop back into the water and I am using size 3.5 jig could this be too big for the little fellas where they don't have such big mouth to bite and hold on to the jig? Any expert advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Squid are pretty intelligent creatures believe it or not. But most importantly, they have excellent eyesight. Sometimes they just aren't falling for the jig. While the jig is on the bottom (or below subsurface), they have a lot of time to decide whether or not they want it...or believe the jig is a real meal. When you reel in the jig and it gets closer to the surface, the squid doesn't have a lot of time to think or observe...they just react. Very similar to fish.

Yes, in most cases, jig size is important. Small jigs get small squid. And big jigs get the big ones...IN MOST CASES.

When the squid are in heavy & are hungry, they will nail any jig, in my experience. When the squid are in heavy, sometimes they wont hit anything lol. Sometimes it takes some time to figure out exactly what they want. And sometimes you just strike out no matter what you do. Thats the beauty of squid fishing. They can be a challenge. Keep at it. Youll get em!

Finally caught my first ever squid three days ago no longer a virgin. Only caught one that day but went back yesterday and caught another three YAY!!!

Catching squid is sooooooo much more fun than catching fish honestly. You get to see them following the lure back and attack it then all the ink jet action whoa... I think I am hooked, gotta go back there tonight!!!

Yeah was about to give up but though I'd give it another try. The three squids that I caught were like within the time span of 15 minutes from first cast!!! But after that I tried for another one hour nothing, I could see them followed the jig back but they didn't want to take it &#$@! Took some pictures but need to figure how to post it up.

squid can be down right hard to catch sometimes and you have to work out what gets thier attention.

one thing I do when squid follow the jig right to your feet is stop winding and just twitch the jig a bit and it will throw the squids train of thought and they will just grab the jig so then you just lift your rod.

but to be able to do this you need to reset the weight on your jigs so they dont sink like a rock and only sink so slow and level.

welcome the the squid virus club...lol

mug
make squid your friend...then bag them
