What Is Thebest Squid/light Rock Spinning Rod Reel Combo?
#1
Hi all, I just joined this site, I do a fair bit of squidding, and fishing of the beach and rocks up here in newcastle, and am looking to buy a new outfit for squid fishing, and spinning for bonitio and tailor off the rocks. Im after a rod about 8ft in length, and will prob put 12 or 16lb braid on it, and I want it to cast size 3 squid jigs and lures up to and maybe just over 20grams a long, long way. What I breifly tried and am now selling on eBay was a small shimano sedona 2500FD reel with a 7'6" starlo stix snapper spin rod (5-8kg/ 8-21gms) The reel was fast enough to catch the frigates but I had major line dramas when using it and in two trips due to wind knots , huge gripes, loops of line knotting around runners ect lost 100m of new (and expensive) 12lb sunline castaway braid). I must have tied 50 albright knots reattaching shock leaders-v frustrating and lost alot of lures both small metals and squid jigs aswell. The squid lures I cast are size 3, and the lures Im using for spinning for fish are only 20grams. Does such a rod exist?, reel suggestions? Ive read that you need special small reels to help avoid these braid problems that have special line laying properties?, and there are some rods that have tangle free runners (LC guides), or no guides at all (new Diawa emeraldas?-anyone used them?).Anyway thought Id do some research and ask the experts. Appreciate any feedback? Any suggestions?

Dawso, just seen this post. It depends on your budget and it's a big ask trying to cover all bases. I reckon the best value squidding outfit out there would be a Daiwa Egee 2506 reel ($199.00) matched to a Shimano Sephia BB 800ML ($250.00 landed from PLAT in Japan). Now we are talking $500.00 by the time we put braid on it.

Really before I started specialist squid fishing, I got away with a Shimano Catana 7ft rod ($50.00) and it was matched to one of my bream spinning reels.

For spinning for bonito, as much as I like Daiwa the extra gear ratio of the Shimanos would be better, something like a 2500- 4000 sized Stradic or Sustain.

here's a laugh for you , this is my U-beaut combo

ugly stik gb1800 medium action 6-8.5kg rating....it's actually one of my snapper rods.. LOL

and my reel is a eurostar baitfeeder rxc 50 spooled with 2.7kg maxima mono and I use a bit of 8lb flurocarbon leader

thats it....not even a $200 outfit and it sorts out the squid in my neighbourhood not a worry.

mug
make squid your friend...then bag them

Dawso, depending on how much you want to spend, for starting up i would get something like this rod: k'slabo 7'9"

http://www.fishonproshop.com.au/fishonpros...;model=VS792FEG

or if you want something a little stiffer: 8'5"

You its a great rod for squidding, i personally use this rod. You can also chase tailor, bream, bonito etc with it as it has a very nice curve to it yet it is still nice and crisp. For a reel i probably wouldn't go a sedona, like budda said i would go for a sustain or even better a stradic. If you want to go cheaper i would look at a penn affinity as these have a worm drive ossilation which means it wraps the braid onto the reel spool more evenly which is important when making long casts with light braid.

If you need anymore info on this rod or anything else feel free to pm me mate,

Cheers,

Pete
