hey all,
i thought id make a thread and document my results for my first squidding season... im still very new to squidding but through the forum and its various members, im slowly picking up handy tips and tricks to increase my kill rate! thanks heaps guyz!!! =) anways, moving on to my most recent squid outings.....

last night would have to of been the night where i saw the most squid! id say well over 20! however, didnt end up catching a thing! initially i was getting alot of interest from afew squid with my 3.0 pink/yellow jig... quite afew squid would lunge at the jig and let go at the final minute before i could net them out of the water... i found that the squids that did lunge at the squid would only do so 2 or 3 times then they would move on, and no matter wat type of jig retrieval method i used after that, it wouldnt catch their interest... i also tried various other coloured jigs lastnight such as blue, orange and green, but the pink/yellow one seemed to get the best results interms of catchin the squids interests... alot of the squid would surround the jig while i was doing a slow retrieval but not strike at it while others would actually swim away from the jig <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
it was a very frustrating night as the squid were all right there.... ahh, but its still early days, winter awaits!

i thought id give this morning another go due to the large amount of squid sightings lastnight.... sadly, i only manage to spot 1 squid by chance... i was doin a slow retrieval and wen the jig was around 3 meters away from me, i saw a squid come up from the depths, trail it for about 5 seconds so i thought id stop reeling in and let the jig slowly sink... however, once i did that, the squid vanished into the depths of the sea again... i was tempted to try a jig whose weight hadnt been modified but opted not to, im guessing i might of had more luck as there might have been more squid towards the seabed... again, SQUID: 1... CK!: 0 lol
i brought sum fish oil today to dip my jigs into... ive read mixed responses about adding scents to jigs on this forum... i guess theres only one way to find out...

yet another unsuccessful night for me =( however, i did get a chance to briefly catch up with paul aka "ru 12 mug" for afew more tips and tricks, thanx again paul!! i can feel squid number 2 coming on soon! lol
conditions were quite ideal for squidding 2nite as the water was relatively calm near the rockwalls making "sight squidding" a relatively easy task.... there were also quite afew memebers from the new egi site, and was told that afew of them managed to land afew, congradz to them =)
the only sort of action i got was 2 strong pulls from 2 different squid in a different location from the rockwalls... the first squid that lunged at the jig i actualy thought i had a snag, so i looked a distance away from where i was standing to see what it was and next thing you know a massive ink trail was left behind and the squid let go and the other encounter, the squid was quite literally at my feet... it took the jig, however from side on, and not from behind where the spikes are, needless to say, i wasnt goin to bag that one....
anyways, here is a pic of the mad scientist himself.... well done to paul for successfully landing afew squid 2nite, he was up to number 5 when i took this photo for him...

had to go and dump some green prawns shells last night after dinner so I couldn't help myself and took the rod with me and scored another 8 for my troubles , met another squido down there last night who said he had been trying to catch up with me for a week....going down every night I think , well he got lucky last night and found me wandering the harbour doing my worst to the squid population.
they were amazed at the squid I caught right beside them and couldn't believe thier eyes.

Was so good to meet you mug! Thanks for sharing your tips. Was awesome to see you in action. We saw a few after you left but they just weren't interested in our jigs. There was a monster down by the rocks but unfortunately no luck for the night. We're off to find some more jigs ready for tweaking and we'll be back down by the water soon. This squidding business is soooo addictive.
ck1, unfortunately for us all the squid are still in the harbour! hopefully not for long though! btw do you fish in the yellow jacket?

lastnight was one of the slowest nights to date... i only ended up seeing 4 squid in total.... mayb due to the rain? besides that coniditions were quite ideal for squidding (calm clear water, light current, light winds).... i ended up getting one squid to strike out of the 4 that i saw... but again, the main problem for me now is to actualli get them hooked... there has been numerius occasions where the squid would strike at the jig, appear to be hooked on... and just before id scoop them out of the water, they would let go.... im constantly keeping tension on the line while the squid is hooked, so im guessing maybe these imitation jigs dont have very sharp hooks???
i also met up with another squidder lastnite..... think his name is randy? he manged to spot afew in another location but couldnt seem to hook the squid either... i wonder if he ended up catching them???

Hi ck1
Randy's my husband. He went without me last night <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> He saw heaps of squid last night but didn't have a net. Hooked 3 where he met you but as soon as he lifted them out of the water they let go. Squid - 3 Randy - 0 Serves him right for going without me! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

it's all to do with your jigs , some hook but dont stay that way , the rip off shrimp hunters you buy from e-bay are a clasic example of this failure.

yeah... there were 3 squid in that spot the whole night... but i couldnt seem to catch them... its unfortunate that randy couldnt get them onto land before they dropped off <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

yeah... i think ive learnt this the hard way.... my shrimp hunger imitations seem to b doin the job fine wen it comes to attracting squid.. but when it comes to actually getting the squid hooked, then thats another story...
anyhow, in light of wat was said above... i went out and got myself a new jig from the "yamashita natural colour" range... the size of it is a 2.0... i must say, this is the most realistic jig i have ever come across in my short squidding career! lol cant wait to test it out... mayb 2nite....

well.... what can i say? once again, i come home empty handed.... BUT! i met afew more squiders out there lastnight and they had a fountain of knowledge to share.... was good to meet you guys! =) water was relatively calm lastnight, however, it was pretty much raining on and off every 10 minutes... i was feeling kinda light headed towards the end of the night and decided to call it quits... one of the other guyz caught 11 squid by the time i had left... his equipment and technique was quite pro and im now tempted 2 invest in some more quality jigs and a egi rod....MAYB! there were squid all over the place lastnight and alot were seen traveling solo, and according to one of the guys i met, he was saying he finds it easier to catch squid wen they are in small groups compared to that of when they are solo... his theory was that wen they are in groups, is when they are on the hunt and will take anything they see....
i had a chance to try out my "2.0 yamashita natual colour" jig lastnight with limited success.... however, i was casting in areas where there was very minimal light.... i believe id get more success if i casted in areas which had sufficient lighting.... ill have to give the jig another go next time...
