Yes -- Santa Rosalia, BCS in the Gulf of California is an absoutely amazing place. There is a lot of really interesting socioeconomic stuff going on right now, with Mexican squid-permit holders joining together to form cooperative fishing groups to rival the large Korean processing plants that heretofore controlled the show. The town has a few thousand people and about 60,000 tons of Humboldt squid are landed per year -- all caught on hand-lines with jigs.
We do a lot of research there, mostly biology and oceanography, but the sociology has me intrigued. There is a great project there for somebody who knows how to do this work.
