Hi again Glen,
Flinders Island is squid heaven, but also salmon heaven too. - I have never experienced salmon fishing the like of which is here. The salmon are prolific and are able to be caught the lenghth of the island especially the east coast which is almost entirely surf beach, approximately 60 kilometres of it.
The North East river is a tidal river, and quite picturesque. The salmon move in and out of the river with the tide sometimes in quite large schools. It is quite a unique place, and would have to be one of the best salmon fishing spots in Australia.
I have fished it a few times now, and always scored salmon on lures from the rocks. The sizes do vary, and I would say it is entirely possible to catch 2 to 3kg salmon in numbers under the right conditions. The locals often trawl lures inside the river from small punts and catch plenty. The river is great for salt water fly fishing for salmon, and enthusiasts enjoy great results.
I have caught many sized salmon in and around this area especially from the beach at dusk, and I can tell you that you are always a chance of landing a tail walking, monster, torpedo salmon.
Other species in the area that are regularly caught are Flounder, Gummy Shark. large Flathead, King George Whiting and Crayfish.
The island is not inundated with tourists, and I have been able to enjoy this particular spot many times on my own. It is one of fishings best kept secrets and certainly one of the reasons that eventually brought me to Flinders Island to settle.
Regards
Washa
