Flinders Island, TAS - Washa - 12-09-2005 Hi all, While searching the net for squid info, I was glad to find this site. Great stuff !!! So here I am, a new squidfish member that would like contribute and learn. I have just moved permanently from Melbourne to Flinders Island Tasmania which I have found to be squid heaven. I have caught many squid from the wharves and rocks and I am constantly up for new fishing ideas and techniques. I am happy to reply to any questions with regard to Flinders Island, as I have found it to be wonderful squiddy fishy place, that keen squid fisherpersons should consider visiting. Regards all Washa Flinders Island, TAS - glen - 13-09-2005 hi washa! welcome to the site! you know i have always wanted to go to flinders island. i have heard about the great salmon fishing around north east river! it would be great if you could give us a run down on some of the good spots. i know there is already a lot of info at the following site but maybe you can tell us where to catch a monster squid! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':clover:' /> http://focusonflinders.com.au/fishing2.htm also, do you have a tackle shop on flinders island? what is the best airline from melbourne? all the best, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ![]() Flinders Island, TAS - aok47 - 14-09-2005 gday washa and welcome to squidfish! Most of them I have caught at the Lady Barron wharf with the average squid weighing around a Kilo, The largest I have landed would be around 2.5 Kilo. I have hooked into larger ones but have lost them trying to lift them up with the jig line only. I have since solved the problem by making a specially designed squid gaff that can cope with the weight of a monster. The best places I have found so far are the Lady Barron wharf, Whitemark wharf and at Trousers Point off the rocks. The main airline is Airlines of Tasmania which flies a minimum of three times a week from Moorabbin Melbourne and Launceston Tasmania to Flinders Island. There is also TGS airline which operates out of Tooradin Victoria which flies irregularly and directly to Lady Barron, they also own a large new charterboat named Catapult which has recently arrived on the island and will work out of Lady Barron. Fishing tackle is available at outlets in Lady Barron and Whitemark but it is fairly basic and limited. I am planning to start a tackle hire business for the next tourist season. I can also organise accommodation or any other requirements that visitors may need. Hope this information is useful, Regards Washa Flinders Island, TAS - glen - 14-09-2005 hi washa, thanks for the info. have you ever fished around north east river? is it true that you can get 3kg salmon one after the other on lure? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ![]() Flinders Island, TAS - Washa - 15-09-2005 Hi again Glen, Flinders Island is squid heaven, but also salmon heaven too. - I have never experienced salmon fishing the like of which is here. The salmon are prolific and are able to be caught the lenghth of the island especially the east coast which is almost entirely surf beach, approximately 60 kilometres of it. The North East river is a tidal river, and quite picturesque. The salmon move in and out of the river with the tide sometimes in quite large schools. It is quite a unique place, and would have to be one of the best salmon fishing spots in Australia. I have fished it a few times now, and always scored salmon on lures from the rocks. The sizes do vary, and I would say it is entirely possible to catch 2 to 3kg salmon in numbers under the right conditions. The locals often trawl lures inside the river from small punts and catch plenty. The river is great for salt water fly fishing for salmon, and enthusiasts enjoy great results. I have caught many sized salmon in and around this area especially from the beach at dusk, and I can tell you that you are always a chance of landing a tail walking, monster, torpedo salmon. Other species in the area that are regularly caught are Flounder, Gummy Shark. large Flathead, King George Whiting and Crayfish. The island is not inundated with tourists, and I have been able to enjoy this particular spot many times on my own. It is one of fishings best kept secrets and certainly one of the reasons that eventually brought me to Flinders Island to settle. Regards Washa Flinders Island, TAS - Washa - 15-09-2005 Hi Aok47, Thanks for the welcome. I know that you would have enjoyed your visit and that the trouble is it is never long enough. I was told by locals about them when I arrived on Flinders Island. I was fishing the Lady Barron wharf one day for flathead, and while winding in my rod to check the bait, noticed the yellow tails following my bait. I changed over to a silver spinner, and on fast retrieve, hooked up immediately, only to be busted off on the pylons of the wharf. They were only rats, but gave me a great tussle on my light tackle. I didn't land any that day. However, a week later, while fishing for whiting from a boat not far from the wharf, I managed to land one of about 2.5kg. I thought I had hooked the grand daddy of King George. Thats right !!! - Kingfish from a wharf !! An amazing place.
