I do the spit trick, and generally don't have a problem, but every once in a while it pays to give your mask a good clean out with toothpaste - I'm not sure why it works, but someone told me that the inside of the mask accumulates some sort of build up that causes undue fogging, which the toothpaste removes - not sure if this is true or not.
Also, there are some commercial products that you can buy to use instead of spit - some americans on a dive boat I was on were horrified to see me spit in my mask, and insisted that I use some of their defogging drops - they worked fine, but no better than spit in my opinion. I reckon you should try washing your mask out with toothpaste and then see if the problem remains.
